It’s distressing to read recent data about kittens and foster participation, but I believe that we have a responsibility as an industry to reflect on current trends and respond strategically. Young kittens will continue to be at high risk unless we can do two things: 1) Reduce the number of kittens needing care by sterilizing cats—especially outdoor community cats who gave birth to ~80% of kittens in shelters in 2024. 2) Increase the availability of resources for kittens, including recruiting and retaining well-supported foster parents, and building targeted kitten programs. Currently, there is a large gap between the number of pre-adoption age kittens entering shelters and the resources to support them. Sadly, this gap means that 0-8 week old kittens continue to be the most at risk of death of any population in US shelters. If data interests you, I highly recommend reading the 2025 State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report, a massive annual report published by @hillspet that assesses current shelter data, surveys, and industry trends. This year’s “The Fostering Landscape” section contains a ton of useful information about what is preventing people from fostering—especially concerns about affordability, which are understandably even stronger for younger generations. For me, this information tells us that we need to: 1) Ensure that fostering is 100% free for foster parents; over 50% of shelters now provide all supplies, so if your program is not able to do this yet, it’s a great goal to set. 2) Ensure that foster recruitment efforts include clear messaging that vet costs are FREE (and supplies, if true for your program.) The 2025 @hillspet State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report also includes an essay I wrote about foster retention; I share how data shows we may be losing great foster parents by failing to provide them with a good experience, and how ramping up efforts for timely medical intervention may play a key role in helping foster parents stay active. Read it at the link in my story! If you’re outside of the industry and want to help, membership with @orphankittenclub is a great way to help fund nationwide solutions for kittens in shelters. ❤️

I can’t tell you how happy it made me to stumble upon this PSA about TNR in Kamakura, Japan! This is located on a very busy walking path by the train station. All around the world, trap-neuter-return is a humane method for reducing the volume of kittens being born outdoors. It was wonderful to see people stopping to learn about this important practice that prevents so much suffering—and how they can support the wonderful work of @kamakuranekohotspprt! ????

2 months ago, Maxine was a tiny panther seed…who almost didn’t get to grow. Now she’s in full blossom! It’s devastating to know how many never get that chance. But it doesn’t have to be this way. You can make a difference for kittens like her by fostering for your local shelter, or by joining @orphankittenclub. Maxine and Roo will be adopted in just a few days, and you’ll be able to keep up with them at @tairn_and_tiramisu ????????

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and I’ve teamed up with @wisdompanel to help spread the word! Dog intake rates are at record highs, with so many lovely pups awaiting a home. We adopted our second shelter dog @alittlelittles this year from @theanimalpad and we adore him! One of the first things I did was test his DNA with a @wisdompanel kit to learn more about his ancestry, traits, relatives, genetic health and behavior. They have the most accurate dog DNA tests on the market, and one little swab can open a whole world of insights about your cat or dog’s story. This month, @wisdompanel is donating a portion of every on-site sale to dog groups including my favorite dog rescue @theanimalpad. Right now you can get 30% off a kit using my code HANNAHPRIME. One of the best deals of the year! #wisdompanelpartner #adoptashelterdogmonth

The kittens are ready for their close up! ???? We are working on a beautiful new video about @orphankittenclub and our impact on 88,000 kittens and counting(!!!) Today Roo, Maxine, Dingo and Wallaby got to participate in the filming with me and OKC Executive Director Jackie! They were all absolute superstars. I want to give the biggest thanks ever to cinematographer @joecallahan1 for volunteering his talent to bring this project to life, and to stylist @catthompsonhair for getting our hair looking camera ready. Thank you, thank you!

Maxine the forever baby! ???? This little girl just doesn’t want to quit the bottle. And that’s okay! Even though she eats wet food throughout the day, we’ll offer her a daily bottle until she lets us know she’s ready to stop. ❤️
