Life update: 5 weeks ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer. A week from today I will be having a mastectomy. Though part of me wants to deal with all of this privately, a larger part of me feels this weight and isolation of keeping it secret, as if it’s something shameful (even though I’m not at all ashamed). So here I am getting it off my chest (pun intended). Processing all of this has been exhausting, but as my sister reminded me, we’ve kinda been preparing for this our whole lives. My mom was diagnosed at 37 (she passed when I was 12), and I was diagnosed at 38, just a few days before Mother’s Day (thanks universe!) Yes, I’ve gotten my genetic testing done; it came back negative. I keep reminding myself of the advances in treatment that have been made in the last few decades and how treatable this can be. Science is cool like that. This year is going to be tough, but I’m focusing on the positives and finding every silver lining I can. I found a lump and acted on it same day; as an avoidant person, I’m proud of myself for that. I’m lucky enough to have supportive, loving people around me. And overall, I’m feeling optimistic. It will all be ok. In a year or two, this will just be something I went through and am on the other side of. I’ll have finally gotten that reduction I’ve always wanted! I won’t be knocking over things on the counter. I’ll have so many more wardrobe options available to me. No more back problems WHAT? Backless dress WHO?? I don’t know exactly what this coming year looks like for me yet. I don’t know if I’ll have to go through chemo/radiation, but I’ll be doing what I can to stay active and working to keep some normalcy. I will be listening to my body and doing what feels right, though I’m hoping to be shooting again by August. For the month of July (and maybe longer), I’ll be taking on retouching work, so lmk if you have a project I can help with. Freelancers gotta freelance, amiright? Also if anyone else has been through this, I’d love to hear from you. We’re in the club no one wants to be in, but at least we can support each other through it ???? Oh and the statistic is 1 in 8, so go get your boobies checked! #fuckcancer
