The Education of an Idealist by Samantha Power

I picked up this book because of my interest in international law and diplomacy. This book is about having a voice and calling out government inaction in the face of human rights abuses. It is also about the ease in which an outsider criticises from a theoretical standpoint and the difficulty of putting such theory into practice as an insider. A former activist, the author fought for certain ideals that she ultimately had to compromise on as she grappled with politics and other economic considerations when she became a part of the system that she had been critiquing from afar. I encourage you to have a read if you are interested in human rights and public service, or if you simply wonder how to make a difference even in the smallest ways.

What is it about?
Storytelling is a life skill that, when learned and cultivated, will enrich the storytellerโ€™s life and the lives of people in their circle. The process of learning involves a more critical assessment of oneโ€™s childhood, past experiences, and day to day life. A storyteller should aim to spot storyworthy moments, regardless of how uneventful oneโ€™s day seems on the surface. Cultivation of this skill involves speaking up while maintaining vulnerability and authenticity.

My thoughts?
If you struggle to find meaning in your life, this book will help you find it. It can help you take control of your life if you are ready to take the driver's seat but feel like a passenger. Iโ€™ve tried the authorโ€™s exercise called โ€œHomework for Lifeโ€, and I reckon if you religiously complete the exercise on a day to day then โ€œthrowaway daysโ€ will be a thing of the past.

If you enjoy self-development books.

The Rosie Project, Graeme Simsion

I was so engrossed in this fiction novel from the beginning, even if I would not describe it as a page-turner. Admittedly I was immediately curious to find out if Professor Don Tillman, the protagonist, succeeds in finding the perfect wife by imposing his carefully drafted 16-page questionnaire on the women he meets to identify โ€˜the one.โ€™ It was because I found Donโ€™s intelligence and yet social awkwardness-missing-social cues character traits endearing. You might find yourself rooting for him early on in the novel and feel a sense of triumph as he navigates his feelings for Rosie and take on โ€˜the father projectโ€™ for her.

Rating: 5/5 (fun and light-hearted, I was laughing out loud while reading certain sections of the book)

Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup, John Carreyrou

Summary: An investigative journalist who was the first to publish a Wall Street Journal expose on Theranos wrote this non-fiction book regarding the companyโ€™s fraudulent and illegal practices. Theranos was essentially a healthcare company in Silicon Valley that disguised itself as a technology company. True to the somewhat common practice of โ€œfake it until you make itโ€ in the technology world, Elizabeth Holmes, founder and CEO, blatantly lied to investors and clients about the workability of its products and charmed the public and the industry into branding her the โ€œnext Steve Jobs.โ€ Employees who tried to speak out were silenced by the companyโ€™s renowned lawyers through threats and legal action, while the more unfortunate ones had their lives destroyed and even ended through guilt and fear. Even worse, patients and doctors that relied on the results of Theranosโ€™ blood testing products suffered from emotional and monetary consequences.

Key takeaway: We need ambition to progress in life. Nevertheless, too much ambition can cause us to lose sight of our purpose for money and fame, regardless of the people we harm or lose along the way.

Rating: 3.5/5. It is easy to read and somewhat written like a thriller which makes it engaging. However, certain sections seem unnecessary, e.g., too many technical details on the science of blood testing (although I may be biased as I enjoyed the sections explaining the regulations and Theranosโ€™ attempt to get around them).

Educated, Tara Westover

Summary: This memoir is about change, for better or worse, when one learns information that supports or contradicts what one has always known. On a broader scale, the author's personal story encourages the reader to question whether education is a tool and to what end: to progress in life and elevate oneโ€™s circle by influencing them for the better, or alienate the

The Righteous Mind, Jonathan Haidt

Summary: The author explains that each person can perceive a set number of moral receptors (akin to our taste perceptions for salty, sweet, sour, etc.), but that only particular types of moral receptors appeal to an individual. These moral receptors make up a person's moral framework, which then dictates an individual's actions and perceptions of right and wrong. More than just providing us with a framework to understand what appeals to liberals and conservatives (and, accordingly, a tool to campaign for liberalism or conservatism effectively), this book teaches us to put oneself in another's shoes by being mindful of these moral receptors and the other's moral leanings. By doing so, we are setting the stage for an open dialogue where we focus not on what is right or wrong but on hearing and considering perspectives that are different from ours. More importantly, that we do not necessarily have to agree with opposing views.

Key takeaway: Neither liberals nor conservatives are in the right or the wrong. There is generally no right or wrong opinion, preference, or judgment. There are only differences in moral frameworks.

Rating: 4/5 (a treasure trove for personal and political insights)

On a superficial level, Esther Greenwood is a young and educated lady with a promising career as a writer. On a deeper level, she descends into madness as she is engulfed by her own psyche and confronts the expectations society has of her as a woman in a manโ€™s world.

The book tackles issues such as, what to do with your life, how to determine what you want, the pressures of relationships, and being authentic. The subject matter is heavy and critical, but the writing is straightforward and the story relatable.

The Lean Startup written by Eric Ries

The Lean Startup movement supports the view that the scientific method of setting and testing hypotheses is an effective way to answer the most pressing innovation question: how can a company build a sustainable organisation around a new set of products or services?

The book explains that our worldly problems of wastefulness stem from trying too hard at the wrong things. As such, it is insufficient for companies to urge its employees to work harder. The focus should be to learn what is currently unknown, which is the real goal of innovation.

Intimacies by Katie Kitamura

What is it about?
This book gives the reader an insight into the mind of a woman who struggles with rootedness and stability. She leaves New York and takes up a temporary role as an interpreter at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. As she faces power, love, and violence in her personal and professional life, the woman questions the equanimity demanded by her job and expected by her lover, acquaintances, friends, and colleagues.

How I discovered it?
From @barackobama โ€˜s summer reading list

My thoughts?
As someone whose mind is on overdrive almost always, it was interesting to step outside my own and into someone elseโ€™s. The protagonist goes through observations and analyses before deciding or taking action. Nevertheless, appearances and expectations do not always allow her to think or act as she deems fit. I think the narrative teaches empathy and understanding.

Who would like it?
Those who have an interest in psychology or enjoy psychological thrillers.
