A sad, almost heartbreaking, collection of short stories about several characters who have crossed paths and, in some way, influenced the decisions made and actions taken, and their consequences. Itโ€™s almost painfully nostalgic as their lives serve as a reminder of lost time, that we can no longer grasp or even embody the person we had been, that our lives have blossomed or withered in ways that we did not expect, and regret for the time that had passed between the then and the now, not so much a longing for what had been. Timeโ€™s a goon, they say. #read #bookreview #book #avisitfromthegoonsquad

โ€œHumanity is male, and man defines woman, not in herself, but in relation to himself; she is not considered an autonomous being.โ€ It would be a monumental task to finish, and more importantly, understand this very complex and thought-provoking book. Itโ€™s been characterised as the feminist manifesto because in it Beauvoir explains from a historical, economic, sociological, and philosophical standpoint how women are not born woman but rather becomes woman. Gender is a construct created and imposed on women by men. Since man is able to control the narrative, he puts woman firmly into place by subjugating her as the โ€œotherโ€. Although one can argue that this book is nothing but a theoretical exposition, I have personally witnessed and experienced how superiority is granted to men not just by men but by women themselves. This should not come as a a surprise because womenโ€™s role as being secondary to men has been ingrained in all of us since young, and it starts with, and is entrenched in, the way a mother may choose to raise her daughter as compared to her son, and is a result of previous generationsโ€™ and patriarchal societiesโ€™ expectations of the family and insistence that the womanโ€™s role in it is limited to that of a housewife who needs to completely sacrifice and subject herself to the husband as the โ€œman of the houseโ€, and without passions and interests of her own. I think the responsibility to create and push for equality between men and women lies in both men and women. Humanity has made significant progress in this regard and so some of Beauvoirโ€™s observations in her book are no longer true, but I think it is worth reading to inspire us to take action where and when needed. #read #bookreview #thesecondsex #simonedebeauvoir #book #women

If given the chance, would you travel back in time knowing that you cannot change the present, and that you need to finish what you came for and return to the present before the coffee gets cold? This is an opportunity available to customers and staff of a vintage cafe in Japan. Four individuals with shared desires return to the past and ultimately get something out of the experience that helps them deal with the present. #read #bookreview #book #beforethecoffeegetscold #bookreviewer

On a superficial level, Esther Greenwood is a young and educated lady with a promising career as a writer. On a deeper level, she descends into madness as she is engulfed by her own psyche and confronts the expectations society has of her as a woman in a manโ€™s world. The book tackles issues such as, what to do with your life, how to determine what you want, the pressures of relationships, and being authentic. The subject matter is heavy and critical, but the writing is straightforward and the story relatable. #bookreview #sylviaplath #thebelljar #read #booklover

The author recounts her experience raising children in France after permanently moving there from the US shortly after getting married. Although her story essentially centres around parenting, she weaves her observations, concerns and analyses of different parenting styles with funny anecdotes of her interactions with family, friends, early education teachers, doctors, etc. (after all, it takes a village to raise a child) in France and in the US. This book is not your typical โ€œparentingโ€ book peppered with edicts that a mother or soon-to-be mother is expected to follow. In fact, Iโ€™m already in my 3rd trimester and this is the only parenting book Iโ€™ve picked up because I typically shy away from rule-based books (unless of course Iโ€™m reading a law book or laws and regulations for work) which can be boring and hard to read for pleasure. This is a great book for moms or moms to be, or couples looking to start a family. Thanks to my friend @evangelineoh for recommending this book! #bringingupbebe #book #bookreview #read #bookreviewer #pregnancy #parenting

The Lean Startup written by Eric Ries The Lean Startup movement supports the view that the scientific method of setting and testing hypotheses is an effective way to answer the most pressing innovation question: how can a company build a sustainable organisation around a new set of products or services? The book explains that our worldly problems of wastefulness stem from trying too hard at the wrong things. As such, it is insufficient for companies to urge its employees to work harder. The focus should be to learn what is currently unknown, which is the real goal of innovation. #theleanstartup #ericries #read #book #bookreview

The Silent Patient, Alex Michaelides To say that I enjoyed this psychological thriller is an understatement - I finished reading the entire book in less than 24 hours. The writing is both straightforward and captivating. I couldnโ€™t tell if I was reading a book or watching a movie. Itโ€™s about a female painter who supposedly murdered her husband and is later found to be mentally incapacitated, and a psychotherapist who seeks this woman to supposedly help her process whatโ€™s happened and treat her mental illness. Three-fourths into the book youโ€™ll come across an unexpected twist that will somewhat clarify the various relationships between the characters and you may start to find that the person you think is the protagonist is actually the antagonist, and vice versa. #thesilentpatient #book #bookreview #alexmichaelides #read

The Mill on the Floss, George Eliot โ€œThere is no sense of ease like the ease we felt in those scenes where we were born, where objects became dear to us before we had known the labour of choice, and where the outer world seemed only an extension of our own personality; we accepted and loved it as we accepted our own sense of existence and our own limbs.โ€ A nostalgic book about childhood, family dynamics, and parental influence. As you read it you may start to recall childhood memories and see them with a fresh perspective, and which may invoke negative or positive emotions depending on which lens you look at them. This book is a good read - it has an entertaining plot and is an easy read, but I had to gloss over some pages with conversations that are unnecessarily lengthy. #book #bookreview #georgeeliot #millonthefloss
