Reconnaissance Training Company: BRC 4-21 during their 3rd Phase (Amphib) carrying boats across NAB Coronado to the Silver Strand to learn engines and endure surf torture …

Few Marines (let alone Americans) endure this amount of pain and suffering to accomplish their goals …

Our Marines with 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion carry out helocast training as a part of their Marine Corps Combat Readiness Evaluation. This portion of the training focused on diverse insertion and extraction methods and steadfast communications employment.

MSgt Troy Mitchell was one of the leaders and creative minds behind the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) 0321 becoming a primary MOS, setting the stage for today’s Reconnaissance Marines and Special Amphibious Reconnaissance Corpsmen. The same also applies to the creation of MCSOCOM DET-1.

Troy was a visionary and pioneer of many key initiatives to modernize the Marine Reconnaissance community and create what is today’s Marine Special Operations Command and its Raiders.

He was working in the Pentagon at PP&O POG on September 11th, 2001 when the hijacked aircraft struck the Pentagon.

Troy retired from the Marine Corps in 2005 and started his family business, Mitchell’s Lock & Safe.

On October 28th, 2009, while helping a woman who was experiencing car trouble, Troy was murdered during an armed robbery.

Two decades of extremely dangerous service to our Nation in any clime and place, he is a brother who will never be forgotten.

“Forever shall I strive to maintain the tremendous reputation of those who have gone before me”

Line Of Effort 2 (LOE2): Deliberate/Reoccurring Programs - Recon Owned Small Business Grant (semi annual)

The MRF selected Whalen’s Meat Packing LLC owned by teammate Robin Whalen as one of our semi annual Recon owned small businesses grant recipients.

Robin and his fiancé Jennifer decided to donate ~90 Turkeys to the Montana Veterans Meat Locker on behalf of the MRF and his small business to ensure our brother and sister veterans and their families in need have a home cooked meal on Thanksgiving.

Great job Robin and Jen!

The Reconnaissance Foundation selects six Recon owned small businesses every six months and provides each with grant money to support their growing business and in return each Recon owned business donates goods or services to the active duty & reserve force or to an effort for the greater good.

LOE 3: Historic Preservation

Today we remember Colonel John Ripley passed away on 28 October 2008.

…..while under intense unrelenting enemy fire, dangled for an estimated three hours under the bridge in order to attach 500 pounds of explosives to the span, ultimately dropping it in place, thus halting the advance of the NVA armored column from advancing into a friendly hamlet. His actions earned him the Navy Cross. He was also awarded the Silver Star for actions while serving as an Infantry Company Commander in 3rd Battalion 3rd Marine Regiment.

Ripley, a “quad body” and the first Marine inducted in the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame, is a legendary Force Reconnaissance Marine, leader of men and mentor to generations of Marines.
