I should’ve posted this a long time ago. But perfectionism paralyzed me. I needed the perfect picture in which to share the perfect caption that would help balance out any “embarrassment” of sharing the raw, and sometimes messy, journey that my memoir, The Superior Act of Presenting Your Teeth to Strangers, details. Instead I am going to share my heart. Writing this story allowed me to be vulnerable in a way that I’m often unable to speaking out loud. Ever since I was a little girl, writing has given me the voice I didn’t always possess verbally. In this social media age, image is everything, and this book may shatter the image you have of me. The Superior Act of Presenting Your Teeth to Strangers spotlights my struggles with mental illness, motherhood, illness, death, and grief. I understand the agony of being trapped inside your own mind when your mind is the most dangerous place you can be. I understand the fear of being locked inside a mental institution. I understand the cruel longing to self-harm. I understand the desperation of wanting to end your life. In the past, my personal battles were exponentially amplified by feelings of isolation and aloneness. This story is my attempted contribution, even if only in a small way, to alleviating that for others by connecting with them through my memoir and offering reassurance that their pain is not unique unto themselves alone. What you are looking at is a reminder that mental illness does not always look the way we think it does.
