Not a post to make you sweat… just some thoughts I had during a gratitude run today.
⠀
My IG is mostly dedicated to sharing my tips on how to become a stronger runner. And while I’m not going to stop providing that, I do want to pause for a minute to talk about the mental side of this sport.
As a coach, I can only truly provide you with about 20% of what you need to cross the finish line. The other 80% is on you.
I can’t manufacture self-belief, but I can tell you first-hand, it is the single most valuable tool you have as an endurance athlete.
⠀
Every runner experiences fatigue, pain and doubt. I do, you do, Meb does. It’s those who develop an adaptive response to fatigue or pain, instead of a quitter’s mentality, who understand the importance of presence and possibility. Over the years, I’ve stopped obsessing about time and pace, and now my effort is mostly concentrated on letting go of expectations, and focusing not on how the present challenge feels physically, but how I feel about the challenge mentally.
Allow your pain or trauma to be the wind at your back, not what breaks you.
The runners who know how to do that show up to every run knowing even though the road ahead will be tough, nothing is tougher than continually failing because their only measure of self-worth comes from a medal.
⠀
When I tore my meniscus a few months ago, I wasn’t sure what the future looked like, but I embraced the setback because almost every setback I’ve had in life has led me me to some of my greatest accomplishments, as a human and as an athlete.
Initially, I had a hard time with my injury mentally. I thought, “this little ass tear is going to ruin my life,” and I reminisced on all the 50k and marathon finishes I’ve had, wondering how the hell I was ever going to do that again. Then, I completely let go. I rehabbed like I was training for the olympics because I realized not being able to run robbed me of what I love most about running; personal transformation and gratitude.
⠀
What endurance really comes down to is the desire to transform as a person, not to win a medal. Trust me.
