A print of printmaking? A print of printmaking!⁣

During the Edo period, #artisans were one of the four social classes—alongside warriors, farmers, and merchants. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
In this 19th-century triptych, Utagawa Kunisada shows artisans as fashionably dressed townswomen instead of men, who are more typical of the social category—inviting viewers, past and present, to reflect on gender stereotypes.⁣
⁣
The seven women are illustrated inside a woodblock printer's studio engrossed in various stages of printmaking. Can you spot all of these processes? ⁣
⁣⁣⁣
See this work, alongside 34 other rare ukiyo-e prints from the Lee E. Dirks Collection, through May 31 in

This summer, Techno meets the Middle Ages—get ready for Sonic Cloisters ? ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Tune in for our new series of virtual concerts filmed at the @metcloisters featuring renowned and emerging electronic-music artists. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
This #MetLiveArts concert series—created in collaboration with Shawn Schwartz, founder of the famed Brooklyn electronic music venues Halcyon and Output—explores unexpected parallels between Techno and the art of the Middle Ages. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Much like the medieval art that surrounds each performance, modern Techno expresses present-day anguish, expectation, and celebration, responding to inequity, suffering, and uncertainty with bright innovation and imagination.⁣⁣⁣

The French artist joined the Académie Royale in 1770 and went on to exhibit at the Salon for more than 45 years. Throughout her extensive career she enjoyed favorable critical opinion as well as the patronage of Queen Marie Antoinette and Empress Josephine.

This painting was probably among the four still lifes and two portraits that Vallayer-Coster showed at the Salon of 1781.
