New acquisition! Today we celebrate 2.5 acres of near-pristine desert conserved in the foothills of the Little Mule Mountains in the Chuckwalla Area of Critical Environmental Concern! As a large intact ecosystem, this landscape has immense ecological value. In addition to its unusually high densities of birds, reptiles and mammals such as the burro deer, it is also critical habitat for the threatened Agassizi’s Desert Tortoise. While 2.5 acres might not sound like much, we are every bit as grateful for these small acquisitions that help us to piece together larger swaths of public lands. Thank you for your support!

The temperature was creeping up to 98 degrees and Justin Streit was thankful for the shade of the cottonwood. It was the last day of his bird surveys at Palisades Ranch, and he had already seen a few new yellow warblers on Plot 7 and a recently occupied Cooper’s hawk nest with fledglings begging for food. But there was one species he was hoping to see. Finally, from one of the cottonwood stringers along the western edge of the riparian forest, he heard the unmistakable call of the western yellow-billed cuckoo.

Palisades Ranch, in the Western Mojave, is attracting rare species. Thank you to @sierraclub California and the Nevada Desert Committee's Desert Report for sharing this story! Read more at the link in our bio - story starts on page 16. Photo: Justin Streit/SWCA

Please join us Tuesday, March 23 from 6-7pm for MDLT’s Virtual Business Mixer! We recognize the enormous challenges businesses faced in 2020. In November 2019 we hosted our first Business Mixer, providing an opportunity for hi-desert businesses to network. While we can’t comfortably gather in person this year, we know the need for community is greater than ever – so we’re bringing the mixer to you! Some terrific local representatives will be joining us, sharing how they had to pivot during COVID. Speakers will include Melissa Grisi of @blue_sky_therapy, Marylee McIntyre of @boosorganicoven, Sarah Taylor of @jtcountrykitchen and David Smith, Superintendent of @joshuatreenps. There will be time for you to network and share too! We look forward to connecting with you; please RSVP at MDLT.org/business-mixer or via the link in our bio!

We’re so inspired by our #MilesforMDLT participants and love hearing their reasons for joining this campaign. Today we share Aubrey Diehl’s story; her goal is to hike 100 miles and raise $1000, and she is swiftly on her way! In her own words:
“Joshua Tree National Park was my backyard growing up. Home was a few tiny desert towns, strung together by a lonely highway. We grew up running around in the wide open space, under bright blue skies and endless sunshine. The Mojave Desert, specifically Joshua Tree National Park, has been my inspiration for most of my projects during the completion of my degree. My dream career goal is to one day work with an organization that connects community to the desert. This area is now more popular than any of us desert kids could have ever dreamed it would be.....and is quickly being loved to death. I want people to love this desert the way I do but that means we need it for the future! Organizations like MDLT are amazing desert angels who ensure critical bits of this deserty heaven are saved and donated to larger organizations, so that we all may enjoy it for decades to come.”
Thank you Aubrey for your kind support!

The Chuckwalla Bench is a spectacular landscape with abundant wildlife and rare desert plants. It's located between the Chocolate and the Chuckwalla mountain ranges in the Colorado Desert, stretching from Joshua Tree National Park nearly to the Mexican border. Because of its remote location, the Chuckwalla Bench has dark night skies where you can see the Milky Way, constellations, and planets. Several species of plants exist here that are found nowhere else on earth, such as the Munz Cholla cactus, the Mecca Aster, and the Orocopia Sage. This area is critical habitat for the threatened desert tortoise and prime habitat for the burro deer.
Visitor kiosks and 674 educational signs have been installed there to inform about the area’s critical habitat designation, and to point to OHV designated routes. MDLT led this joint signage project, in partnership with the @nationalparkservice, @MyPublicLands, the @CAStateParks OHV Recreational Trails Program, and @USFWS. Special thanks to @AmeriCorps who helped with the sign installation in February 2020.
