Two weeks after debuting new single “Mine or Yours,” Hikaru Utada returns to THE FIRST TAKE to perform THE song of all songs, “First Love.” Not only is Hikaru here, but so is the original arranger Kei Kawano, who accompanies on piano for the first time since the two recorded the song 25+ years ago. Written by Hikki at just age 15, the ultimate nostalgia anthem is the title track of the (still) best-selling album in Japan’s history, and one of the defining J-Pop songs of the ‘90s. It’s constantly ranked as one of the top go-to karaoke songs. It inspired an whole namesake Netflix drama TV series in 2022, which resulted in another chart resurgence. And it seems like every week to this day, another idol releases a cover of the stone-cold classic. Just very special to see in 2025. Vocals on point as always, and love the before and after awkwardness at the microphone. Okay, back to crying like a child. #hikaruutada #firstlove #thefirsttake

A #Madonna TV series. Thank God. (Still so scared.) Deadline reports that a limited TV series about the life and music of the “Dear Jessie” chanteuse is in the works at Netflix with Shawn Levy, executive producer on #StrangerThings, director of #DeadpoolVsWolverine, and the upcoming #StarWars movie. (So basically, he can handle a project that’s as Big As Madonna.) It’s “not related” to the biopic that’s been in development hell for years. The news also follows her polling the audience late last year about whether her life story should be told in a movie or TV form - which was met with a resounding outcry for a series. (Myself included!) Julia Garner is still the “most likely” choice to play the role, but there’s still no deal. Call up the girls… Madonna Boot Camp: M-Dolla Reloaded - The Re-Up incoming. Even though we already know, at the end of the day, the only person Madonna will ever allow to play Madonna is almost surely...Madonna.

If there’s one thing a good British pop girlie loves to do, it’s have a dig through the crates. From Charli xcx to Jade to @pinkpantheress, today’s top purveyors of pop from across the pond keep paying tribute to the artists who shaped their identity. “When you have taste as an artist, you can’t fail,” Pink - of the Pantheress variety, not the one flying through the air - said while munching on popcorn during a sit-down with Zane Lowe. And she’s right. The 24-year-old English singer-songwriter already proved her exceptional level of taste on her 2021 debut mixtape #ToHellWithIt and debut album, #HeavenKnows, one of the best albums of 2023. Now she returns with her second mixtape #FancyThat, a brisk 9-track, 20-minute set blurring even more genres, samples and interpolations at breakneck speed. The influences are vast, including Groove Armada, Panic! at the Disco, Underworld, Basement Jaxx, and yes, even an obscure #Sugababes cut from 20 years ago. “Nice to Know You” samples a collab between William Orbit, #RayOfLight co-architect himself, Kenna, and the ‘Babes. (Keisha and Mutya are credited as co-writers. Sorry, Heidi.) The track was released on Orbit’s 2006 album, #HelloWaveforms. It’s one of the coolest things the ‘Babes have done. Sadly it’s collecting dust, as it’s not on streaming. Yet. “If anyone can clock the sample at first listen I’ll be very shocked and very surprised happily,” Pink said to Spotify UK. Orbit seems just as surprised to hear it as the rest of us, and game to get it out there in the world. (See his comment on co-writer Karen Poole’s post. If Pink manages to put “Spiral” on streaming, we’ll be indebted to her eternally.) And that’s not all the @sugababes love on the mixtape: the post-chorus melody of “Stateside” is an interpolation of “Freak Like Me,” their 2002 hit Adina Howard cover. Pink’s track was produced by The Dare, who had no idea: “No [he did not know who they were], but, I mean, everyone needs to be educated at some point in their life,” she told BBC Radio. A pop nerd after my own heart. Bring a hard hat with a headlamp and a pickaxe, we’re going mining in the digital depths with #PinkPantheress for sonic gold.

Take me back to God’s country: #CelebrationTour. @madonna, Her Madgesty, is marking the (almost) one year anniversary of the record-breaking final stop of her tour with a behind-the-scenes video, providing an all-too-brief glimpse of the chaos leading up to the free Copacabana Beach show in Rio de Janeiro. You said come to Brazil. And oh, she did. Highlights include: - @bobthedragqueen’s electrifying intro. “This is not just a show. This is not just a concert. This is not just a party. IT’S A CELEBRATION, BITCHES.” Still get chills as “Nothing Really Matters” kicks in. Still the best, most inspired opening song she could ever pick. I’ll never shut up about it. - Cute rehearsal footage with sweet @pabllovittar, in full fan-girl mode, while preparing a special samba-fied rendition of “Music” for Brazil. (“The favela won.”) - Jean Paul Gaultier’s Brazilian flag-inspired corset, and all the drama that went into its design. “Fabulous is comfortable.” Forcing Maddie to sweat it out and break it in. “We do as mother tells us to.” - Stuart Price’s dry humor, over and over, and the effort that went into adapting the show for the outside. - A proud mom and her kids. - Madonnamania, 40+ years deep into her career. - Me (well, MuuMuse), front and center, amid all of the headlines. (No, I’m not okay.) I’d go 500 more times if I could. Watch the full thing on her YouTube. Now M, please, no more teasing: release the concert special/Blu-ray/whatever it is. #Madonna

Sophie Ellis-Bextor is stable as a table. It’s been well over a year since the Kitchen Disco diva vaulted back up the charts thanks to the inclusion of timeless classic “Murder on the Dancefloor” on the soundtrack of #Saltburn. (I still haven’t seen it, but thank you to Barry Keoghan for burning the salt, dancing around naked and lapping up Jacob Elordi‘s cummy bath water, and/or whatever else happened.) In that time, SEB’s reached unimaginable new heights over 25 years deep into her career, from her first-ever headlining trek across North America to performing on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. And, just as any seasoned pop star should do upon experiencing sudden global recognition again (see also: the summer of “Padam”), Sophie seized the moment, signed a new deal, and twirled her way back into the recording studio to work on her eighth studio album. She released “Freedom of the Night” in October, followed by “Relentless Love” in March. And as a special surprise, she’s just supplied us with a stunning third single, #Vertigo. Naturally, hearing that the song was called “Vertigo” thrust me into a Liza Minnelli-as-the-vertigo-prone-Lucille Austero #ArrestedDevelopment spiral. How grand! How terribly grand! But back to SEB. Produced by James Greenwood (AKA Ghost Culture), who has worked with Kelly Lee Owens, Alison Goldfrapp and Foxes, the song’s swirling, whirling pulsations harken back to the days of #MakeAScene. It’s no surprise: the song was written with the relentlessly reliable @hazzarozzasongs, who penned the almighty “Bittersweet” among several others on Sophie’s perfect 2011 record. “You know I can’t straight think or sleep at night, I’m at the mercy of the rush,” she proclaims before plunging into a love-dizzy chorus. “You give me vertigo!” (Even that mixed-up phrasing – “I can’t straight think” – is a brilliant touch.) The dramatic strings are a beaut too, especially during the song’s dramatic bridge - a much-needed balm at a time when bridges in pop are critically endangered. The album is shaping up to be SEB’s most full-on collection of bangers in over a decade. Trip the light fantastic...but watch your step. #SophieEllisBextor
