#Didyouknow the Gallery holds the world's largest collection of Elizabethan and Jacobean paintings? Including this striking portrait of Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester. Courtier and influential favourite of Elizabeth I, he was the Queen's only serious English suitor. Made Master of the Horse at Elizabeth's accession, he joined the Privy Council in 1562, and was created Earl of Leicester and Baron of Denbigh in 1564. Leicester commanded the unsuccessful force against Spain in the Netherlands (1585), and was involved in a number of scandals and intrigues.

In this portrait, Leicester is shown in a brilliant red suit wearing the badge of the Order of the Garter. This picture was probably originally a full-length portrait and has been cut down. Some of the artist's preparatory drawing, particularly in the face, has become visible on the surface of the painting over time.

Wishing Sir Ian McKellen a very Happy Birthday ?

Widely regarded as one of the leading actors of his generation, McKellen has played iconic roles in both classical and modern repertoire in theatres worldwide. Born in Burnley and educated at Cambridge University, he made his London debut in 1964. His stage performances, particularly of Shakespeare, are legendary and include leads in 'Much Ado About Nothing' (1962), 'Henry V’ (1963), 'Richard II' (1969) and the infamous 'Macbeth', in which he played opposite Dame Judi Dench (1976-7).

McKellen has also graced our screens in numerous films, including his Academy Award nominated performance as Gandalf in the 'Lord of the Rings’ trilogy (2001-03), and was knighted in 1991 for his services to the performing arts. McKellen is an avid campaigner for LGBTQ+ rights and a co-founder of Stonewall - the UK and Europe's largest LGBTQ+ rights organisation.

Manifesting some #sunshine, our #portraitoftheday features critic and biographer Lytton Strachey and his sister Marjorie, enjoying a sunny game of chess in the grounds of his home Ham Spray House in Wiltshire. ☀️

After joining the select group known as the 'Apostles' at Cambridge University, Strachey went on to become a key member of the Bloomsbury Group, along with Viriginia Woolf, Vanessa Bell and Maynard Keynes. His iconoclastic biographical essays ‘Eminent Victorians’ (1918), set a new standard for biography for the twentieth century, and ‘Elizabeth and Essex’ (1928), about Queen Elizabeth I, was influential in the way it mixed biography with fiction.
