We made it back to New York just in time - thank you to our friends, colleagues and clients for asking after us. It was an unusual year at TEFAF Maastricht but we saw some good art on our trip (which we will be sharing in the coming weeks) including this prophetic detail from Rubens’ Women of the Apocalypse in the Alte Pinakothek in Münich. Painted around 1623, it was commissioned for the high altar of the Cathedral of St Mary in Freising, Southern Germany. There is an oil sketch for it in the @gettymuseum acquired in 1984.

Detail from Andrea di Bonaiuti’s frescoes in Santa Maria Novella executed between 1365-67 for the Dominican Chapter House, known as the Spanish Chapel, considered to be among the most original artistic achievements of the Florentine trecento. Bonaiuti’s rather archaic, stylized approach is what gives him the reputation of being part of a movement that countered the naturalism of Giotto — some argue as a direct response to the Black Death of 1348 that wiped out a third of the population in Europe.

Among the first paintings bought by Catherine II the Great in 1764 from Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky, art advisor to Frederick the Great in Berlin, was this beautiful painting of a Scholar Holding a Book. The illustrious early provenance had been lost until we recently investigated the bold inscriptions and wax seals on the back of the panel, with the help of the @hermitage_museum.
.
It turns out that the painting remained in the Russian Imperial family for three generations, then it was sent along with 200 other pictures from the Hermitage to the newly established Moscow Public and Rumyantsev Museums, Moscow until its closure. Subsequently it was transferred to State then sold off to the art market by 1932. The rest is well known to scholars.
.
The picture belongs to a small oeuvre of works by an associate of Rembrandt known as the the Monogrammist I.S. — an elusive artist favored by distinguished collectors across Europe, including the Swedish Count Tessin, the Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, and apparently the Empress of Russia. Luckily, unlike many other paintings on panel in the Hermitage, this one did not get transferred to a canvas support and remains in superb condition.
.
The painting is on view at Nicholas Hall @tefaf stand 342 until Sunday March 15.

Until its rediscovery in 2001, this monumental painting by Courbet, La Bohémienne et ses enfants had been hidden under the floorboards of a house in France that belonged to the Ordinaire family, to whom Courbet entrusted over a century ago with the picture to hide before his exile. Considered a sequel to the ‘Stonebreaker’ series, the painting is dated to 1853-54 and remains unfinished at an advanced stage.
.
A strikingly moving image that looks back at Goya but also heralds ideas of modernism, Courbets of this level of import rarely appear on the market. Previously it belonged to the private collection of the distinguished Swiss art dealer Jan Krugier best known for his involvement with Picasso and was the first to organize a Picasso exhibition following the artist’s death in 1973.

The recent renovation at the @uffizigalleries has been quite transformative, yet the fantastic grotesque ceilings have remained more or less unchanged since they were painted, around 1580, by a few artists including Antonio Tempesta, an exceptional draftsman who worked in a diverse range of medium. A Florentine native, he went on to establishing himself in Rome, counting Pope Gregory XIII and Pope Leo XI among his illustrious patrons. It is quite easy to pick on the fact that Tempesta was drawn to complicated battle scenes, which he repeatedly inserted into the wonderfully bizarre and natural decorations - a mannerist extravaganza replete with birds, vegetation, chimeras and other elements of the imagination.

A leading female protagonist of the Italian Baroque, Fede Galizia is best known today for her still-life paintings—which, despite constituting her principle surviving oeuvre, remained virtually unknown to scholars until the twentieth century. One of the finest examples of this composition and unique in its depiction of the locust, the present work is one of twenty or so surviving still lifes by the artist, who would have encountered in Milan where she was active Caravaggio’s Basket of Fruit (1599) and Jan Breughel’s flower paintings that had entered into the Borromeo Cardinals collection during her lifetime. Painted with austere simplicity and crystalline sharpness, the monumental presence of each fruit and flower in this work represent Galizia’s unique and novel contribution to the burgeoning genre of stand-alone still lifes— a relative rarity in Italy at the turn of the seventeenth century.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Only two paintings by Fede Galizia are in North American public collections: one in Montreal and the other in @theringling in Florida. The present painting is on view in our exhibition ‘Faithful to Nature: Lombard Paintings 1530 - 1760’ until December 23, 2019.

An exquisite windswept detail from Francesco Cairo’s only known painting on copper, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, just as she was about to receive the crown of martyrdom. The painting is soon to be presented in our upcoming exhibition ‘Faithful to Nature: Lombard Paintings 1530 - 1760’. As Virginia Brilliant writes in the accompanying catalogue, 'for many of us today, Italian painting of the Renaissance is that of Venice and Florence, and during the Baroque period attention shifts to Bologna, Rome and Naples.’ It has been fifteen years since 'Painters of Reality', a major survey of Lombard paintings was put on at the @metmuseum . Now once again, we turn to Lombardy in north central Italy, which da Vinci, Caravaggio and a great number of extraordinary artists called home. The exhibition opens on Friday, November 1.
