A builder’s own home brings an industrial, New York state of mind to a site in Cambridge – a design style the owners love. The new-build has two separate pavilions, one for the couple and one for their children, and the roof above the open-plan kitchen, dining and living space rises to a pitch of 45 degrees, creating a sense of spaciousness. It features in our February issue, on sale now. Link in bio. Words Sharon Stephenson Photographs Jane Ussher #nzhouseandgarden #nzhouseandgardenmagazine #nzhouse #nzgarden #interiordesign

An exploration of 1960s design styles brightens a fun-filled home on Waikanae Beach. The simple linear form of the home, in its robust coat of metal, gives little away. Once inside, however, there is mystery, drama and surprise. Black and white was a natural theme for the interiors of the waterfront four-bedroom property, but colour-blocking also came into play. When the house opens to the main living area and a grandstand view of the beach, other elements that demand attention include a trio of blue-and-white orbs that hang planet-like above a circular dining table; a curvaceous denim-navy sofa; and a rug that has a psychedelic quality. From the peaceful main bedroom, the owners can watch the beach awaken, as boaties, walkers and their dogs arrive. Explore more of this delightful home in our latest issue, out now. Link in bio. A Mt Maunganui couple rode a crest of creativity with a very personal renovation design of their 1970s family home, just a few houses down from the beach. The Scottish-born pair have extended the house towards the road, keeping a usable back garden. The extension contains an open-plan living area upstairs, what was the kitchen is now the kids’ bathroom and the former bathroom is now an ensuite. The bedrooms have been switched around and much of the original lounge is now a fourth bedroom, cleverly hidden behind wall panels in the wide passageway. Subtle colours inside and out add personality and a point of difference. This home is in our January issue, on sale now. Link in bio. A couple’s honeymoon cruise in the Pacific inspired their frond-filled subtropical Kerikeri garden. They designed the changes to the 3000m² property themselves, and their garden-to-be has gradually changed from a blank canvas to curvaceous abundance, featuring palms, bromeliads, agaves, bird of paradise, orchids, ferns and many more. After a long day’s weeding, a plunge in the swimming pool sets the world to rights again. It’s no wonder they say living at the property is like being on holiday all year round. A rustic garden folly in ancient UK woodlands has become a haven for its expat Kiwi owner. When he and his late wife bought the property 40 years ago, the Summer House was a derelict shed in an overgrown garden – it’s now a rustic retreat that complements the property’s main house. Its restoration was a labour of love, with the aim of retaining the original footprint but to make it harmonise with its woodland surroundings in the English Surrey Hills. Its oak beams, made from reclaimed timbers from the woodlands, have been kept in their original rough-hewn form. After they were exposed they were then treated with layers of white lime to create a contrast with the Florentine terracotta colour of the interior walls and ceilings. The exterior was painted in a soft blue-green and the roof repaired with old clay tiles found discarded in the woods. This dreamy hideaway features in our latest issue, out now. Link in bio. The owner of a Moeraki crib didn’t know she needed it in her life until she popped in one day for a nosy. The 1950s Fibrolite crib, which was previously owned by artist Ralph Hotere, was in good shape – it had been rewired and the bathroom had been upgraded. It has an open-plan kitchen and living room, a woodburner for winter warmth, a deck at the front for summer lounging, and a bedroom with a generous window looking out to sea. The “cribbie” owns the building and leases the land from Ngāi Tahu. The furnishings lean towards mid-century style, many acquired from Trade Me, Facebook Marketplace, op shops or family members. The crib has become a gathering point for family and friends, and she is usually in residence for a weekend each month, staying longer in summer, when she swims, gathers mussels and pāua and cooks simple rustic meals – usually seafood – inspired by what is at her front door This wonderful crib is in our January issue, available now.
