Saving the Northern White Rhino: From the Brink of Extinction to the Edge of Breakthrough Only two northern white rhinos remain—Najin and her daughter Fatu—living under 24/7 protection at Ol Pejeta. The death of Sudan in 2018 marked the species as functionally extinct. But we never gave up. Today, there’s real, tangible hope. Thanks to groundbreaking IVF science, over 35 viable embryos have been created. The next bold step? Implanting these embryos into southern white rhino surrogates. This isn’t just a scientific milestone—it’s a mission to rewrite the story of extinction. And today, on Fatu’s birthday, we’re asking for your support to help fund this historic effort. Let’s show what’s possible when science, determination, and compassion come together. Please share, donate, and be part of this unprecedented journey. Follow the link in our bio to donate today. Meet Diamirza — a bold and determined female eastern black rhino who was born at @olpejeta on 24 October 2017 and translocated to @loisaba_conservancy in January 2024 as part of the Kenya Wildlife Service’s Black Rhino Action Plan. When she first arrived, Diamirza made it clear she had ideas of her own — breaking through the fence and venturing into Loisaba’s north-western side. Despite careful attempts to guide her back, Diamirza decided that was home. Working closely with KWS, Loisaba moved quickly to adapt — expanding the protected sanctuary and extending its perimeter to include Diamirza’s chosen territory. The sanctuary now spans 200 km² (50,000 acres) of Loisaba’s 58,000-acre landscape, incorporating 51 wildlife corridors designed to maintain natural movement while keeping rhinos safe. These corridors, spaced 1–2 km apart, allow elephants, lions, wild dogs, and other species to roam freely — ensuring connectivity and preventing habitat fragmentation. The fence’s effectiveness and wildlife impact are continuously monitored through camera traps and ground patrols in collaboration with San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA), ensuring minimal disruption to ecological balance. Diamirza’s story captures the essence of collaborative conservation — adaptive, connected, and driven by a shared vision. Loisaba and Ol Pejeta, together with KWS and other partners, are working toward a connected future — one where rhinos can roam freely once more across the landscapes that link our conservancies. #ConnectedConservation #BlackRhino #KWS #LoisabaConservancy #OlPejetaConservancy #SDZWA #KenyaWildlifeService #RhinoRecovery #WildlifeCorridors #ConservationInAction

We at Ol Pejeta are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Jane Goodall, a visionary scientist and tireless advocate for the natural world. Dr. Goodall’s groundbreaking research transformed our understanding of chimpanzees, revealing the depth of their social bonds, emotional intelligence, and complex behaviours. Her discoveries reshaped scientific thought and continue to inspire generations of researchers and conservationists. In partnership with Kenya Wildlife Service and Ol Pejeta, Dr. Goodall helped establish the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary in 1993. She remained a steadfast supporter of chimpanzee conservation through advocacy and rescue efforts. Many of the chimpanzees at Sweetwaters were rescued through her direct intervention. As the only chimpanzee sanctuary in Kenya, Sweetwaters stands as a living testament to Dr. Goodall’s legacy. We remain committed to championing chimpanzee welfare, protecting their habitats, and educating the public on the urgent need for their conservation. Her work has left a lasting impact and lives on in every chimpanzee we protect. Photo by Michael Neugebauer taken at Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

A New Beginning for Oakley Meet Oakley — one of the first nine black rhinos to make the journey from Ol Pejeta to @segeraretreat. In this powerful moment, he steps out of his transport crate and into a new chapter — one filled with space, safety, and possibility. These are the first of 21 critically endangered black rhinos being translocated as part of a bold, collaborative effort led by @kenyawildlifeservice, @zeitzfoundation, Ol Pejeta, and @lewaconservancy. Over the coming days, 11 more will follow — each one helping to establish a new, secure population on Segera’s 50,000-acre sanctuary. Each rhino moved is more than a number. They’re individuals with names and stories. And each step they take is a step towards a stronger, more resilient future for Kenya’s black rhinos. We want to extend our deepest thanks to the incredible teams involved — from the expert rangers and vets to the transport crews — whose dedication and care make this high-stakes operation possible. Their passion and professionalism ensure every rhino’s journey is as safe and smooth as it can be. Oakley’s release is a symbol of what conservation can achieve. At Ol Pejeta, conservation goes beyond wildlife. Our Community-Based Initiatives are redefining the model by placing people at the centre of protecting nature. Through livestock integration, we are showing that cattle and wildlife can thrive side by side. Managed grazing not only improves grassland health and reduces bush encroachment, it also creates space for species such as rhinos, elephants and lions. The benefits extend further. This approach supports pastoralist communities by providing fair access to grazing and strengthening livelihoods, while the Ankole herds themselves foster biodiversity by creating hotspots for other herbivores, enriching the entire ecosystem. Conservation here is not about excluding people — it is about including them. It is about building a future where people and wildlife flourish together. This is conservation redesigned for the future. Photo: @dylanhabil / Ol Pejeta

Today on Giving Day for Apes, we celebrate the people behind the scenes – the caregivers whose dedication keeps our Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary thriving. Our Head Caregiver, Stephen Mukundi, has cared for chimps for over 20 years. “To care for them effectively, you must understand that your role is similar to that of a parent,” he says. Colleagues Edwin Muriithi and Martin Kinyua echo that sentiment – seeing every chimp not as an animal, but as family. Their compassion is matched only by their professionalism and skill. This is the kind of care your support makes possible – training, treatment, and the daily commitment it takes to help rescued chimps heal and thrive. Support our caregivers today. Donate via the link in our bio. Your gift fuels the work that gives every chimp a second chance. Photos: @director_skinnygenes / Ol Pejeta
