with all the love in me, simply sparking up a conversation. It is interesting for me to think about how easy it is for Black people to constantly be erased from history. Even in 2024, we’re watching and still allowing it to happen. For whatever ridiculous reasons, we think we don’t have the power, but we do. Let’s say locking right! We know that the creator of the dance originally called it “Campbellock.” And we now know the reason it had to be called locking is due to a business issue with Sony, where because of the song’s title “Do the Campbellock,” the group, The Cambellock Dancers, was blocked from using that name. So they changed their name to “The Lockers.” This caused the dance to be called “locking.” So no one remembers the name campbellock. Even today you will hear people from the States call the dance “The Rerun.” In the dance community, we know Fred Berry, an original Campbellock Dancer, as “Mr. Penguin.” But since Fred Berry played the beloved Rerun, on the classic tv show “What’s Happening,” the rest of the USA, and the world knows him, and the dance, as Rerun. So now that we know, can we just make sure to call the dance “Campbellock?” We don’t need to call it locking anymore. So all dance events all over the world, if you have the category LOCKING….stop that now. call it what it is: CAMPBELLOCK????????????
