“‘Reclaiming Beauty’ is a photo essay about identity and acceptance; about my own image and gender identity, my relationship with beauty and how they've evolved over time as a result of the constant unlearning of the ways in which I was taught to see and value myself and others.
I wanted to recreate these childhood photos (more than 20 years later) to show the constant force of love and support that my mother has been and continues to be in my life since my early years. I often played with her clothes to be and look like her but one day she decided to make me a bride and indulge in my fantasies; she draped her sari on me, covered me in her wedding jewellery and convinced my aunt to dress her son as the groom. The documentation of this spontaneous and fun day resulted in these beautiful and evocative portraits which, besides their obvious visual appeal, I feel have a lot more to say about my mother, her open heart and her relationship with me.

Through visual exploration of my image, I am now embracing my appreciation and embodiment of traditionally ‘feminine’ qualities that I had long tried to suppress, allowing them to bloom alongside and balance my more 'masculine' attributes.

I'm sure many will recognise their own journeys while reading mine and so I wanted to share this, hoping someone, somewhere, would find the courage to be braver and stronger in their own personal battles and choose to be the poets of their own lives.”

‘The Racing Heart’⏳ is a performance art piece that I ( @imdad_barbhuyan ) and @boostuffy enacted and shot in February 2020, in the streets and subways of Delhi, just before the Pandemic.

“The images show a lost and distraught Bengali Indian bride who finds herself in an alien, urban landscape-wandering the subways and streets of Delhi, looking for her groom- who probably didn't show up to their wedding.
The bride is a personification of my own feelings and anxieties about the speed at which we are so used to navigating through our urban lives but more importantly about (not) finding love. This piece, essentially, tries to express the emptiness we all feel, it being ever so difficult to find love or forge meaningful relationships, in the maddening and dizzying frenzy of our current times. “ ?

Thoughts on ‘family’ ? Hello ? @imdad_barbhuyan here, continuing my takeover at Paper Journal :)

“Family is where we feel we belong. It is our safe sanctuary; the source of warmth and comfort, of unconditional and endless love. It is the people who always believe in us, are ready to celebrate us and are there to share the good and the bad.
It is where we leave a part of us and carry it within us, wherever we go.This imagined space acts as a pivot and keeps us anchored as we navigate the ebbs and flows of life. “

Hi, @imdad_barbhuyan here sharing my work at Paper Journal this week.

i am a self taught visual artist based out of New Delhi, India. Exploring themes of melancholia, memory and intimacy, my work is an amalgamation of editorials, portraits, still lives, set design and performance art; Through my work I try to document beauty and project and inspire a harmony between the natural world and human existence.

I discovered photography more as a tool for documentation during my architectural studies but I wholeheartedly embraced the photographic medium as i realised its inherent potential in expressing intangible ideas, emotions and experiences.

A harmony with water?

@imdad_barbhuyan here with some ‘Flowers from Coimbatore’ ?

Flower markets in India are very unique. The energy is one of chaos and madness; bustling with an extremely dense crowd rushing and pushing you around. Visited mostly by wholesale agents, it is difficult to leasurely stroll around to enjoy such a market for visual or sensory pleasure but all the more rewarding when you finally get to see the delicate beauties resting humbly but also gloriously in their own sweet spaces ?
