Many veterans in NYC face mental health issues, housing issues, and food insecurity at higher rates than the general public. It often makes me sad to think about because military service is so challenging and then to feel like you’re just dropped after can be disappointing. Today, I spent Veterans Day in the Bronx (not too far from where I grew up!!!) at the Commonwealth Veterans Residence where a warm meal and fellowship took place. I also had an opportunity to ask @zohrankmamdani about how he plans on supporting veterans as mayor.

Veterans Day this week NYC Mayor-elect @zohrankmamdani spend quality time with US veterans in the Bronx. I overheard one say we’ve never had anyone come visit us. Another veteran adorned the mayor-elect with a pin to show gratitude for working with @govkathyhochul to ensure snap recipients got their benefits. It was hard not to feel emotional witnessing an unhoused veteran give one of his only prized possessions to the mayoral elect for fighting for the people.
