✶Upcoming Workshop: Lumen Printing With Rachelle Bussières.

✶When: September 4 & 5 (Saturday & Sunday), 10 am - 6 pm.

✶What: Through an exploration of the lumen print process, students will experiment with different techniques and develop an understanding of the factors that influence the colors on the gelatin silver prints – light, sun, time, and paper.

✶On the second day, attendees will embark on a personal project and create a series of one of a kind prints using one of the techniques. The workshop will conclude in a small critic group. Students will spend time outdoors and on Penumbra’s rooftop where they will be able to expose their prints using natural light.

✶When: August 28 & 29, 2021, 10 am - 6 pm.

✶Details: An intensive two-day workshop for beginner photographers created to introduce them to basic techniques in black-and-white darkroom film processing and printing. 

✶By the end of the workshop, students will have critical knowledge in how to: 

✶Develop and print their own black-and-white film.

✶Create contact sheets and test strips to determine the tonal range of their photographs.

✶Chemistry will be provided by our darkroom (Sprint Chemistry). We have basic plastic reels and tanks for film processing (Patterson), but students are welcome to bring their own set.

✶Sam will teach students how to create glass negatives, tintypes, and ambrotypes in camera. Students will also learn the techniques for preparing the plate, pouring collodion, exposing, developing, fixing, and varnishing + chemical mixing and safety. 

✶When: August 28 & 29, 2021, 10am - 6pm

✶What to know: The cameras, chemicals, and materials will be supplied.

✶AboutSam Dole: Sam earned his BFA in photography from School of Visual Arts where he received the Rhodes Award for Outstanding Achievement. 

✶He studied 19th-century photography with noted photo historian Matthew Isenburg and has attended workshops conducted by John Coffer at Camp Tintype in Dundee, NY where he honed his technique with wet plate legends Will Dunniway and Claude Levet. 

✶Sam’s work has appeared in Shutterbug Magazine and the SVA Visual Arts Journal. His work exhibited in the 2012 SVA Mentors Show as well as first prize winner at the 2012 SoHo Photo Gallery Alternative Process Show.
