Hamilton Park Pomona CA with @angelonce and @cityofpomona and my amazing team @marley_mar_3 @brandonreese24 @arce_cola @fentwoodhoops @pancho_mx1 This instal got kicked off with an incredible community volunteer effort of over 75 people, a challenging “claw machine” vending machine style design incorporating @angelonce signature elephants all in various colors and glory. Pomona is in transition in the most beautiful way. This park has taken shape over the past few years and I’m so extremely grateful to help be a small part in its revival. Art is the final addition in this space and the basketball courts getting such a large contribution of that is an incredible feat that I’m so thankful the city realized and brought to fruition. Angel @angelonce is such a genuine soul that is so rare and I couldn’t be more grateful for the embrace and warmth shown to our team as well as the hours spent helping bring his vision to reality. A true team player with a Rolodex of talents. Thank you brother for being you and trusting us! Thank you @project_backboard !!! #weigsworld #projectbackboard #pomona #losangeles #courtart #basketballart #basketball #elephants #courtmural #courts #buckets #muralist

Here are a few helpful install tricks we’ve learned over the years (full renovation guide PDF by @tripledoublestudio and video by @fearoffear_sk on the FAQs page of our website)… 1. Texture: Use sports specific resurfacing and color coating materials only for the best durability and texture… 2: Squeegee: Use a squeegee for color coating as much as possible, if you don’t have experience ask a local contractor to assist with large sections… 3. Soapstone > Chalk to draw artwork: Soapstone leaves less residue, lasts longer and is easier to tape to a pole than chalk (so you can walk and draw) - check the welding section of your hardware store… 4. Brushes > Rollers: 5” - 9” brushes that can attach to a pole (made for staining decks or coating roofs) work better than rollers and can be washed and used over and over… 5. Ghost Lines: If you have a white game line over a white section use “ghost lines” - 0.7” - 1” tape on each side of your game line - for visibility (and always seal your tape before painting to reduce bleed)… 6. Corner 3: If your court is less than 40’ wide (so you can’t make the corner three at least 18’ from the post) run the three point line directly into the sideline - a 15’ jumper from the corner shouldn’t be worth an extra point! #????????????renovationguide

BACK IN STOCK, all proceeds go to support the 501(c)(3) @project_backboard • “Common Practice: Basketball & Contemporary Art" (edited by @carlosrolon @madbasic & @art.work.basketball and published by @skiraeditore ) is the first comprehensive illustrated publication to explore the relationship between basketball and contemporary art. The book covers more than a century of artwork from over 250 leading artists who have utilized painting, photography, sculpture, and social practice to examine the sport and surrounding culture of basketball. From David Hammons' Higher Goals and Robert Indiana’s Mecca Floor to the more recent works of Nina Chanel Abney and Titus Kaphar, basketball has proven an especially popular sport in art. Whether in the depiction of players, abstract use of motifs, or as a means of examining social inequality and political justice, this collection takes readers on a journey to understand the game of basketball, not only as a physical activity played between a series of lines, but also as a reflection of a greater human experience. Gathering work by more than 250 artists from the 20th century to now, this volume reveals a little-discussed point of overlap between art and sport, in part to be found in the titular phrase “common practice”—“practice” in the sense of “to perform an activity or exercise regularly in order to improve or maintain one’s proficiency.” This book argues that the need to rehearse, discover and explore through the act of doing makes these two very different ideas of perfecting one’s craft very similar. Artists include: Nina Chanel Abney, Emma Amos, Romare Bearden, Salvador Dalí, Elaine de Kooning, Keith Haring, David Hammons, Barkley Hendricks, Robert Indiana, JR, KAWS, Titus Kaphar, Jacob Lawrence, Roy Lichtenstein, Sharon Lockhart, Robert Longo, Claes Oldenburg, Paul Pfeiffer, Alex Prager, Richard Prince, Robert Rauschenberg, Faith Ringgold, Lorna Simpson, Andy Warhol, Ai Weiwei and Wendy White. #commonpractice #commonpracticebook #basketballart #skira #artbook #projectbackboard #romarebearden #emmamos #kaws #richardavedon #lewalcindor #dannylyon #martinlutherkingjr #guillermoarias #alexprager #carlosrolon

Every court has a story… Six years ago, we painted a court in my hometown to honor my cousin James “Jig” Thomas, who passed away on this very court. For years, we tried to get the town to let us repaint the outdoor courts to use basketball as a way to build up our community but they didn’t think it was a good idea. It took over a decade, but they finally said yes. Not only did they let me paint Idlewild Park, but also Moton Park. I never thought painting basketball courts would change my life, or take me around the ???? and have opportunities to meet so many incredible people. So I’ll say it again… Every court has a story. This is mines! Tell yours. You never know… it might just change your life too. Love y’all. Hope everybody has an amazing Sunday. Peace. Head over to www.EveryCourtHasAStory.com and upload your video and tell your story. #EveryCourtHasAStory #BasketballArt #CommunityFirst #LegacyWork #LetTheCourtsSpeak #PlayInColor????????
