1:07:25…….That’s the time to beat. Two weeks from today, @m.att.taylor and I head to Chicago for the Hyrox World Championships to compete in the Men’s Pro Doubles. I am sitting out the individual race on Saturday to ensure that I give my teammate my all on Sunday. This Hyrox season, 148 teams around the globe have raced in the Men’s Pro Doubles 50-59 Age Group. Matt and I’s time of 1:07:25 in Anaheim sits in 19th place. Who will show up for the World Championships in Chicago? Who knows? All I know is that it’s been a pleasure (a grueling one at that!) to prepare for this event with Mr. T. I think we’re as ready as we can be. One goal…..beat 1:07:25 #hyrox #hyroxamerica #hyroxworldchampionships #hyroxworld #hyroxtraining #hyroxofficialcoach #officialhyroxperformancecoach

Proceed through this review with caution. Basically, that is what I would say about the movie itself as well. Bring Her Back is a gloriously well shot and meticulous film with some of the best performances of the year thus far. Especially Sally Hawkins as the foster mother dealing with personal loss and Billy Barratt as the older sibling coping with a horrific past. These are two characters dealing with intense trauma in an intensely traumatic movie to sit through. Listen carefully, this is NOT an easy watch. It’s not that Bring Her Back is necessarily “scary” as much as it is unnerving. But, if you can get through some of the tougher moments (and they are tough) I think this is a worthy watch for fans of cinema and psychological warfare….if that’s your thing. Grade B+. Discuss…..

If you loved “I Love You Man” but wished it had been darker and much more uncomfortable to watch, then do I have a movie for you. Tim Robinson, best known for his cult Netflix show, I Think You Should Leave, has always been hit or miss with me. Good in short doses but hard to sustain. Well, I stand corrected. Friendship is not just the funniest film of the year, it may be one of the funniest films of the last several. Many have labeled this style of humor as cringe comedy, and they are not wrong, but man this really resonated with me. But this is not just a great vehicle for Robinson. Rudd makes the most out of his subtle performance as the macho weather man who becomes Robinson’s obsession, and writer/director Andrew DeYoung completely gets his leading man and guides him perfectly with both the script and performance. I’m warning you, this is not going to be for everyone, but it definitely was for me. I’m gonna be quoting it for months to come. Grade A- Discuss…..

Crazy can be good or bad. When it’s in the hands of Nicholas Cage, it has the potential to be both. Let me explain. The Surfer is both a phenomenal character study of a man pushed to his utmost limits, but it’s also a film that can’t help but go a bit off the rails in its final act. When Cage discovers that some testosterone fueled locals won’t allow him to surf with his son on the same Australian beach he grew up on, the standoff quickly spirals into a journey of madness and hedonism that some will find compelling and others, confusing and downright weird. For me, it was both. And I like that! At least sometimes. It’s another terrific notch in Cage’s belt and even though they don’t quite stick the landing, it’s a bold and at times, beautiful motion picture. Grade B. Discuss….

And it’s done. Day Two of Graduation is complete and my boy is no longer a student. Very thankful to Chapman University and the Dodge Film program for all they have done for him. And so begins his journey as an immensely talented director of photography/camera operator/1st AC. But more importantly, he has become an exceptional man along the way. To you son, all my love. #chapmanuniversity #dodgeschooloffilmandmediaarts #graduation #directorofphotography????️

It’s over!……or is it? I’m pretty much on board with everyone else on the latest and “last” Mission Impossible, The Final Reckoning. It’s WAY too long, way too heavy in unrelenting exposition and not nearly as whimsical as other installments when it comes to levity within the team (everyone is too serious!). But there is no denying that 1) The stunts and production are on another level and 2) Tom Cruise is insane. If this is the final go around for Mr. C, it’s very bittersweet that this is probably the end of action movies that aren’t filmed in a giant studio in front of green screen. For that alone, this is worth the curtain call. Grade: C FINAL RANKING OF ALL 8 MISSION IMPOSSIBLE MOVIES: 8 - MI 2 (John Woo brought the cheese) 7 - MI Dead Reckoning (Too much motorcycle off a cliff hype) 6 - MI Rouge Nation (Good team building) 5 - MI The Final Reckoning (1st hour is really SLOW but the plane!) 4 - MI 1 (horrible green screen finale dampens this spy thriller) 3 - MI 3 (Phillip Seymour Hoffman, the BEST Villain) 2 - MI Ghost Protocol (The Dubai building sequence is phenomenal) 1 - MI Fallout (It’s got everything and has the human heart on full display) Discuss…..

This movie……is a lot of fun. Sure its “pretty much” the same formula as the other 5 movies that last appeared on the scene 14 years ago, but this one is done really, really well. The opening 10 minutes is technically rivoting and sets the tone for the bloody mayhem ahead. They’ve also thrown in a little family bonding theme here as well that helps set it apart from the other “random group of teens” getting picked off one by one. The kills are gory and imaginative and there are quite a few laughs sandwiched in between death’s revenge. And a big shout out to the late Tony Todd who makes his final screen appearance with a tremendous amount of class and gravitas. Who’d a thunk it??? Grade B. Discuss…..

Let’s address the elephant in the room first. No matter what you think of this movie, Shadow Force is the dumbest name ever. It sounds like something that should star Chuck Norris or Jean Claude Van Damme. And honestly, I was half expecting one of them to show up any minute. With that said…..it ain’t horrible. Yes, the cheese factor here is on full display in this tired tale of a couple of spies who are just trying to depart the system and raise a family, but there is no denying that all involved are giving it everything. I even kinda liked the kid (Jahleel Kamara) even though his insane love for Lionel Richie gets played into the ground. Mark Strong is chewing up the scenery here in his best attempts at Alan Rickman/Die Hard energy and the two leads are adequate. I think the biggest question is not what Method Man is doing here, but how exactly did Academy Award winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph get involved?? What is with these Best Supporting actress winner’s agents? First Ariana DeBose, then Da’Vine? Come on now. Grade C- Discuss….
