Most Sundays I run 16+ miles to cap off a 70+ mile week. This week, I ran 16 miles total. One days worth of running over seven days.

Instead of spending hours running, I did cool shit with even cooler people this week. While I love running, I'm perfectly happy to take a break from it to enrich other parts of my life. Having a non-codependent relationship with exercise has undoubtedly made me a better runner. I'm happier, healthier, and less injury prone because I can (and do) take breaks when my mind, body, or life require it. Heck, even professional runners take breaks!

Taking a break from running doesn't make you a bad runner; undisciplined; unfit. It makes you a dynamic person with multiple interests. It's a good thing. If it's been a while since you explored other interests, untie your running shoes and cultivate new hobbies. Your next run will be even sweeter.

I feel like there's lots of messaging out there glorifying busyness and pushing through fatigue and pain to achieve goals. As I get older, I become more protective of my energy.

As an empath and introvert, people and situations can really zap me of my energy.  I had a long day at work and find sometimes working with patients all day as an OT can be really emotionally draining aside from physically draining parts of going to work (all that therapeutic listening can take a toll!)

So even though I wanted to run today,  I knew had to honor my fatigue and just relaxed after work with reruns of ANTM and cat snuggles ? Tomorrow I can run.

Spending this Sunday morning relaxing with all the coffee from our local coffee shop @backyardbeanscoffee and reading Bravery by @alexipappas (I highly recommend it ??). This is the type of morning I was craving after one of my highest mileage weeks which included a ton of speed work! I can’t wait to see how it pays off at the @demarathon and @hotchocolate15k !

R E S T & P L A Y

Today was a 100% rest day for me - for a couple reasons ??‍♀️ But mostly to see if my right leg will feel a little better. I think it’s already back on track - and the rest and extra time with my girl felt good too ??

I love the symmetry with the end of the week and the month! January’s stats: 
??‍♀️ 215 miles run
??‍♀️15 strength sessions

That’s a big month - I haven’t done strength training that consistently in a long time. Thanks to @madeline_moves #tightertogether I am feeling strong! I’ll continue maintenance strength work twice a week now ?

Here’s what last week looked like:

M: 7 miles on the treadmill, watching the sun rise ☀️ followed by TT Upper Body

T: An easier workout of 30 seconds on/1 minute off to stay loose for a #timetrial! 6.75 miles total ✔️

W: A snowy day chock full of Zoom meetings meant I took this as my running rest day. I did the Tighter Together Full Body workout in the evening ?

T: 5.3 chilly morning miles ☃️

F: Time Trial day! ⏱A 10-second PR for me when I clocked a 5:44. With warmup and cooldown I got my long run done, 13 miles total

S: 6 miles with my husband in an absolute downpour in St. Charles, MO. I didn’t run Boston 2018 but I imagine that’s what it felt like ??

S: An early 6 miles on the Katy Trail. My leg was feeling funky over the weekend so I called an audible and lowered my miles a bit ?
