Standout projects making waves around the web

The idea stuck to my neurons like a 90s song. The helmet needed to be shot in the style of 40s fashion images.

A juxtaposition unjustified.    Some threads need pulling, regardless what’s on the other end of the line.   Then it’s made. And it doesn’t fit. It doesn’t fit my brand. Brand. How does a modern photographer relate to it?
Manage your look, curate your feed.    Be consistent, but be creative.
That paradox is creative kryptonite. I’ve long struggled with the label ‘artist’. Who qualifies? What qualifies? Maybe my leading qualification is my my allergy to self imposed parameters. Knowingly passing by the pale of consistency on my way to another project. Thank you’s

I’ve always held admiration for the modest crushers. People doing their own thing in the mountains independent of the attention it may get. Each winter I’ve loved following Mtb photographer @margusriga antics on snow. Big days, small crews, peculiar objectives, and often highlighting amazing skiing within 30 minutes of Vancouver and in line of sight to saltwater. So last winter I asked margus if he’d be keen to ski for my lens with his partner in crime @rhys_verner , to shoot with @rab.equipment. They chose Mt Harvey above Lions Bay, demanding a very dark start, crampon boot packing in coastal rainforest, and long pauses waiting on fickle weather to finally top out.

Who ya gonna call? I’ve been unfortunate enough to have had to call on SAR in the mountains. The sudden depth of gratitude and respect for insanely talented volunteers and well equipped crew will never leave me. @northshorerescue shoot for @arcteyx pro was an impressive production. Simulating full scenes of extraction, leaning out of Talon a thousand feet off the deck and playing do-si-do with @leohoorn____ to make sure we both got what we needed took damn good coordination and makes me appreciate a really good crew even more. Home About ten years ago I met Nat, she was part way through production of her movie Finding the Line. Then, we didn’t share a skin track again until last year. So much was the same, a love of snow, positive attitude, and a great sense of humour. But there was something different. There was the sense that snow and skiing meant something different. It’s still a career, but it’s no longer about making a statement in a movie or in a free ride comp. Now, it seemed to be a way of living. Maybe I’m putting words in her mouth here, but for an expat who has lived all over, any snowy backcountry slope is simply home. The place to relax, think, recharge, connect with the people you love. It no longer needed to be a platform to define, to reinvent, to defy. It can be more. @nat_segal Thanks to @hellyhansen for letting us work from home Thanks to @whitecap providing snowy backcountry slopes. Thanks to @anna_segal @e_r_i_n_s_p_o_n_g for the moral support.

Am I just ‘Influencers in the wild’ with a fancier camera? I’ll go to the ends of the earth to look through a camera and not see the moment with my naked eye. I spent this dramatic sunset evening on Vancouver Island double checking my shot list. Does the broadcast or commercial use of my photography somehow exchange for the sinfulness of missing so many moments while I try to shoot? I imagine some person seeing us shoot, laughing to themselves; another millennial squad missing the moment by trying to capture it. Like pushing water uphill with a rope. Looking back at some of my first photoshoots I can no longer remember anything except for the image, it is now the only moment I hold. The rest of the moments that passed that day, maybe I enjoyed them, maybe I missed them. So now I try to ‘wake up’ over and over again through a shoot, bringing me back into the landscape, and connecting with the people around me. The work is always better when you do. Furthermore, the ambition to create while in nature, is the fuel that runs my desire to experience, to go back. For me, a desire to create makes the journey happen. - - - @arcteryx Models @justis @zoe.beau @matthewlammas @celeste.pomerantz Arc people @jimmykimmer @bznowack Video @willbiname

@Arcteryx Pro Rebrand Many remarkable moments on this project. Putting full trust into a piece of nylon on my 5 point harness several hundred feet off the ground is something surreal. Maybe more than any other shoot, it’s a privilege to work with so many professionals truly capable in their domain, especially @northshorerescue. A key direction for me, was to hunt for the specific moment that professionals rely on their gear, can’t think about their gear, and need it to operate flawlessly. In professions with risks everywhere, that’s the most valuable feature of the gear: a clear mind.
