Lily turned 6 and celebrated by tagging along for a day of family fun: @spiderbaseball game, baseball, playgrounds, and lots of treats. These days, dog birthdays don’t look like the big adventures they used to (think hiking or kayaking), but I realized they don’t need all that. Lily and Koa were happiest just being with us—chasing balls in a baseball field while watching my husband and son practice. Pure golden joy. A little reminder for us parents too: sometimes, the simple moments are the ones that stick—for both pups and kids.

Double digits for the good boy who still plays like he’s five, still seeks out entry points into the water, and still lights up every space he enters. But this milestone hits differently. We lost Aspen at 6. Lily’s recent cancer scare shook us. And now, every moment with Koa feels sweeter — and more meaningful. He’s taught me how to slow down, even when he runs ahead and to latch onto the things that are most meaningful, taking every ounce of joy from them (like his shredded soccer ball).
