I fucking love this picture of me and brother @danteross. I used to hear Dante’s name come up at home before I started hanging out downtown, we’re talking 1988/89. I was too young to go clubbing, etc., but my sister was going to school in Tribeca, and I was enthralled by any stories she’d share about the wild frontier that was lower Manhattan in the 80s. Dante’s name or his writer handle, System, would come up regularly, which eventually was useful because when Dante and I finally met in 1989, I could say “I’m Justine’s younger brother.” That was just before I became “Stretch,” a name that sounded way more appropriate for someone doing a rap show in NYC than my real name, Adrian. It turned out Dante’s Stimulated Dummies partner, Geebee (RIP ????????), was a family friend who I’d known since I was four years old, so Dante has enough reason to deem me worthy of his time. When I got on the radio, Dante was at Elektra Records, where he had just signed Leaders of the New School, Brand Nubian, and Pete Rock and CL Smooth. Dante would hand me test pressings of his signings, which was huge for me and our young radio show. During that time and later, Dante would head up to WKCR to be a semi-regular guest, usually after making the rounds at all the hot spots. Music and humor were always on the menu, and man, the records were incredible, and the jokes were endless. Fast forward to more recent times when our friendship turned deeper and became more of a brotherhood based on a deep love of music, cultural history, and of course, endless, gut-busting laughs. I’m not exaggerating when I say that when I spend time with Dante, I invariably laugh harder than I had in a while, sometimes to the point that my face hurts. Your knowledge of music, across a vast range of genres, is breathtaking, and your taste is exquisite. You always speak up and use your voice to defend what’s right and confront what’s wrong. My only complaint is that you live in Los Angeles! Today is Dante’s birthday, so join me in wishing him all the best and letting him know how much he’s appreciated. Love you, brother. Here’s to more music, more laughs, and more life..

Stretch Armstrong - DJ, Radio Legend, Father to Your Style @stretcharmstrong New York to the death, that’s how I am,” says DJ and music producer Stretch Armstrong, a legend who has helped shape the sound and spirit of New York from the ’90s and beyond. “It has a real magnetic pull on me.” Known for his groundbreaking hip-hop radio show with Bobbito García on Columbia University’s WKCR, Stretch—along with his partner—introduced the world to artists like The Notorious B.I.G., Nas, Jay-Z, and Big Pun before they were stars. Their cultural impact was felt worldwide, and with the release of the 2015 documentary Stretch And Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives on Showtime and Netflix, they went on to host an NPR show featuring A-list luminaries such as Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Lenny Kravitz, Black Thought, Mahershala Ali, and many others. Stretch’s authenticity has led to music-supervisor roles for film and TV, as well as an ongoing global DJ career now in its fourth decade. “As a DJ, watching people dance—that’s the reward,” he says. “But when I travel, I’m reminded that New York is my home: the pace, the heartbeat, the rhythm. NYC has the greatest concentration of people with individual style.” @friendsfromnewyork @heidiheartsclub

Mark’s got a great memoir about NYC club life the 90s. Not only does @iammarkronson produce great music that regularly transcends age and geography, he’s also got a highly entertaining and insightful writing voice with just the right amount of self-deprecation. Mark invited a bunch of his friends, family and heroes for a party/photo shoot for @gq. Lots of laughs and copious eyeliner. ???? The first shot is of me, Mark and our friend @billspector who was a barback at legendary club MK where I had my first weekly residency in 1990 as a 20 year old. The DJ booth and the bar were connected so Bill and I got to know one another, and when he started his own party, he hired me to DJ (for $175 for a full night), which was his entry into the world of party promoting. A few years later, Bill invited Mark to play for him and the rest is history, beautifully told in his book. Grab ???????????????????? ???????????????????????? when you can. Tyreek McDole asked me if I’d sit in with his band. What would I do if I said yes? Wrong answers only. Catch Tyreek McDole (and maybe me) live at Nine Orchard next Monday, Sept. 15 as we kick off our fourth year of live jazz at the hotel. Link in bio for entry.

Tonight, all roads lead to Le Bain/Boom Boom. The occasion? Eli Escobar having a weekly presence at Le Bain for 15 years. Eli all night in Le Bain, me all night in Boom Boom. The only problem for me is I won’t get to hear Eli, who is top 5 of all time for me. ????????

I’m still tripping off what Isaiah Collier (@colliersworld) and his ensemble did last month at Nine Orchard. It is hard to put into words…the virtuosity, the sheer volume and explosiveness, the emotional depth…just wow. Every single person in the room was completely locked in. The exchanges between Isaiah on saxophone and Elew (@elewrockjazz) on piano were absolutely electrifying. What a privilege it is to put these nights together and experience them as a fan (and photographer). Thank you Isaiah, Elew, Conway Campbell, and Tim Regis. You have raised the bar. Our next edition of jazz at Nine Orchard will be a little different because it’ll be on a Tuesday (July 8th) and will take place for the first time in the Greenhouse on the hotel’s rooftop, which has some of the most stunning views of downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn. We are beyond excited to welcome vibraphonist, composer, and bandleader, Sasha Berliner (@sashaberliner). For more info and tickets, link in bio. @nineorchard @leicacamerausa
