‘California Love’ - A new letterpress piece 12 years in the making.

In 2008 we moved to CA as a party of two. Today we leave as a party of four. The past 12 years in CA have been jam packed full of adventure.

Got married here. TEKSTartist was born here. Our two kiddos were born here.

This piece however is not composed of milestones, accolades, or achievements.

Instead it is composed of the names of each and every person who had an impact on our time here.

I’ll be sending out one of these custom letterpress prints to each and every person listed.

I was asked to create a piece for @tonyrobbins 60th birthday! This 48” x 72” hand drawn one of a kind original work was created by warping and twisting the words from 60 of Tony’s most memorable quotes (hand picked by tylerculbertson), into the shape of the icon himself. .

The piece was started in studio, then worked on LIVE at the VIP pre party where it was auctioned off. Every single penny of the proceeds were donated to @ourrescue, an incredible orginazation at the front lines fighting against human trafficking. .

“The Whale” - Georgina Cole Library - Carlsbad California - Feb. 2020

This mural was created by warping/twisting the words from the opening lines of Moby Dick.

THE STORY:

While scrolling through @linkedin last May, I stumbled across a post by @Snyderart about an “open call” for artists to be considered for a large mural at the Carlsbad Library. The call was open six weeks, but I happened to see the post less than an hour before the deadline.
.
.

I dropped what I was doing, scrambled to get all the requested info together, and fired off the email with literal seconds to spare.
. .

In September I was selected as a finalist, and commissioned to mock up a design to be considered for the 19’ x 38’ wall.
.
.

In October I was notified that I won the project. Once we made it through all the contracts and scheduling the project was finally destined to begin mid-February.
.
.

We worked nights and weekends starting Feb 15th. The entire mural took us 40 hours to complete. The focal point of the mural, the whale, is composed of 240 hand painted letters (the first 3 sentences of Moby Dick):

Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation.” .

Incredibly grateful to Richard, Karen, everyone at the Cultural Arts Office who spent their evenings with us while we painted. Also a big thanks to all the staff at the library, Bryan Snyder once again for sharing the opportunity, Zach for helping bring it to life, and last but certainly not least- to my better half @allimarkow for holding down the fort full of crazy kiddos at home so I could get this thing DONE!
