For a long time, almost no one wanted curly hair. People wanted straight, smooth, “manageable” hair. Curly wasn’t something to be enhanced, it was something to be replaced. And the few clients who did want curls had only a few choices: a relaxer, a botox, or a perm. Perms and relaxers on curly or coily hair only made things worse, more dryness, more breakage, limp curls, and limitations on everything they could do next, especially color or highlights. Botox was compatible with highlights, yes, but it was unpredictable, not designed for curls, and still compromised the hair. Back then, I used a thioglycolate relaxer, milder than the stronger ones, but still a relaxer. Still incompatible with color. Still forcing clients to choose between curls and creativity. And every time I used it, something inside me felt off. I didn’t want to offer services that made people choose: curls or color. Texture or health. Meanwhile, my mom was sending me techniques from Brazil, “Beleza Natural,” “Soltura dos Cachos”, treatments meant to “create curls,” but based on guanidine relaxer. The curls looked dull, limp, damaged. Nothing about it felt right, or safe, or future-forward. None of the options aligned with what I believed curls deserved. And then one day, almost by accident, I misread a label, followed the process differently, and the client’s hair came out beautifully curly. Healthy. Bouncy. Alive. I remember staring at the curls thinking: “Wait… this is possible?” That moment became my lesson. My turning point. My permission to stop repeating outdated techniques and start experimenting with something gentler… smarter… more respectful. And slowly, client by client, I began offering this “new way,” even to clients who never imagined themselves with curls, my blowout clients, my straight-hair clients, anyone open to trying something that felt healthier. And that’s how everything began. Not from a plan. Not from a method. But from a moment… a mistake… and a need. A desire to give curls a chance to exist without damage or limitation. This was the lesson: Healthy curl transformation is possible. It just didn’t exist yet. #curlyhairmethod #curlyhairspecialist
