Bonjour mes amis! It's La Fête Nationale, le Quatorze Juillet????, and naturellement, I am celebrating France's revolution and day of independence. My childhood in Lorraine, in northeastern France, imprinted French culture, cuisine, and history on my soul❤️.

I miss this beautiful unspoiled region, especially today. A former Roman province, Lorraine, gets its name from the Latin, Lotharii regnum,

Today it's #FrancophileFriday and #Juneteenth and I am celebrating the incredible talents and life of Josephine Baker, the world's first international Black female superstar. Hearing her voice on the radio in France as a child was my entree into a world of French art and African American culture that transcended country, color, and culture. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Many people may know La Perle Noire as the Folies-Bergère star who wore a banana skirt designed by the French Surrealist Jean Cocteau, but in WWII she was also a hero of the Résistance, a member of the Free France forces in WWII, and a civil rights activist with Martin Luther King. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are thousands of Black women like her whose stories are never told but who deserve our love, admiration, and protection. You can learn more about this American-born French singer and patriot in the terrific book, Brown Sugar, by Donald Bogle. It tells the stories of the best 20th and 21st century's Black female African American singers, dancers, actors, and musicians. It's available at Shop My Instagram Store along with some of Ms. Baker's images and music.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It's #WineWednesday, and the rain makes me long for sunny days in Catalonia. If you head west from Barcelona, the landscape reveals craggy olive trees, old vineyards, and arid, wind-swept, rolling hills. And greeting you are warm, welcoming Catalans who treat you like a long lost friend. They have a well-earned reputation for being generous hosts and love any excuse to throw an impromptu party, which reminds me of Eduard Pons. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
He is a fourth-generation olive oil producer, at Casa Pons, his family's sustainable, organic olive estate in Lleida. He was my gracious host one afternoon, showed me the grounds, and recounted his family's passion and respect for the land and heritage of Catalonia. Or, as Eduard says,

June 15 is Lobster Day?, and before the pandemic changed the way we vacation, droves of tourists used to head north to spend the summer in Maine ? enjoying warm sunny days, cool nights, and bottomless pots of steamed lobster. Sadly, for the lobster, tourist season also coincides with peak lobster season, which runs from mid-summer to mid-fall. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Usually, around mid-to-late July, the waters in the Gulf of Maine begin to warm up, and this causes lobsters to start their seasonal molt. During molting, they shed their old shells, grow in size, and slowly grow new soft shells, which is why the locals call them

In 2018 I was on assignment to cover the Whiskey Trails in Kentucky and Tennesse. I made the trek to local farms, distilleries, and rick houses along winding narrow roads surrounded by lush greenery and rolling countryside. Tasting Bourbon, enjoying delicious Southern food, and hearing about America's native spirit from the master distillers who bring us this amber treasure is an experience everyone should make at least once. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

My afternoon at Jim Beam was like a comfy front porch visit at your favorite Southern uncle's house. It began at the distillery's entrance where a life-size statue of Mr. Jim Beam greats you, was followed by a guided visit to one of the larger rick houses with Fred Noe and his son Freddie, referred to as
