So happy to have helped designed and built the website for boutique sustainable sourcing and production consultancy @anew.studios, launching today, together with @_sharontsang.

Having seen firsthand the textile waste generated by the fashion industry, Sharon founded Anew Studios in 2020 as a commitment to be a part of the circular fashion solution after working independently as an in-house consultant for various startup brands. Her vision is to work from the ground up with entrepreneurs and founders to scale their brands in a sustainable way, and to encourage manufacturers to explore more people and planet-friendly business models. Her past clients include @girlfriend, @thercollective, @abronzeage and more!

Loved working with Sharon on this project. Check out the website on @anew.studios’ profile to learn more about the consultancy’s services and work. Special thanks to @msmichellewylee for connecting us ?

On another note, I have mentioned this here and there but around the time the pandemic hit I’ve started exploring UX design and eventually started working on various website and app design projects with purpose-driven companies. Been loving working on these and using my creative skills to amplify the work of people and organisations making a positive impact. Can’t wait to share more and holla if you’re looking for some web design help! xx

Jan photo dump >> The first book I read this year is Grit by Angela Duckworth, and boy what a book! It’s one of those books you thought you know what it is going to be about but after reading it you realise maybe what you thought it’s going to be about is just 5% of the full read.

When I pick up a non-fiction book, it’s usually because I’m either curious about a topic or want to get more in-depth on a subject. This time, for the first time even maybe, it’s because it’s time to put aside my ego, my excuses, and face a personal fault who is long due for some heart to heart. And once you do it, it’s truly liberating. It’s like pulling out the elephant in the room between you and your partner and talking openly about it. Only it’s between you and yourself.

For anyone looking to embark on a new adventure, a new project for the next year (or decade), or you’re on that journey already, the book is an inspiring tool to help clarify goals and focus your energy on the important things. Plus it’s brilliantly written.

“What is hope? One kind of hope is the expectation that tomorrow will be better than today. It’s the kind of hope that has us yearning for sunnier weather, or a smoother path ahead. It comes without the burden of responsibility. The onus is on the universe to make things better. Grit depends on a different kind of hope. It rests on the expectation that our own efforts can improve our future. I have a feeling tomorrow will be better is different from I resolve to make tomorrow better.”

Amid all the celebrations for the new year, it’s also a good time for us to look back. Towards the end of 2020, I found the time to read more and more about the impact coronavirus had on the garment industry at large, the #PAYUP campaign and reflect on what needs to happen for the fashion industry to REALLY move towards a kinder future. Most of the words in the above slides are taken from @elizabehlcline’s article for @atmos, @cleanclothescampaign, and about #PAYUP campaign initiated by @remakeourworld.

At the beginning of my professional journey learning about sustainable fashion and working with companies on it 3 years ago, my primary concern was the impact fashion has on the planet… Although it is still of significant importance to me, more and more, I realise that there is no sustainable fashion without dignified and fairly employed people. In fact, people come before planet, because the lack of respect towards people in fashion IS a direct cause for the environmental problems in fashion.

Think about it. Because of how low costs are squeezed to produce our clothing, it enables an enormous quantity of clothing to be produced, which creates the obscene problem of overproduction and overconsumption. If all garment workers are fairly paid, fairly treated in the supply chain, costs will rise, production quantities will fall, and DARE I SAY, even if we continue using polyester, the fashion industry’s environmental footprint would be hugely reduced.

(Obviously an idealised scenario. But dare a girl hypothesise.)

Anyway, these are just quick thoughts rushed before a 2nd day of the year dinner. I feel like I got distracted in the last few months and have fallen behind on sharing practical, truly meaningful information about the industry and how we could actively participate in creating a better fashion industry. One of my new year resolutions is to be more consistent and diligent with doing my part in being a part of the solution for this industry, and industry that I believe, despite all its crap, could be a force for good. <3

A happy holiday from me to youuuuu!! This year’s Christmas is a bittersweet one where I get to celebrate with my family but away from my love, separated by Covid for months on end. But if anything this year has reminded me how lucky I am, and how you just got to roll with the hand life deals you and make the best out of it. A delayed move to another country means more time spent with my parents, my grandparents, seeing my mother retire last week, restarting my headpiece brand and reconnecting with my wonderful seamstresses, kickstarting a new journey in digital product design, kindling beautiful friendships both old and new, discovering the wonderful thing that is online classes (@udemy, subtle plug lol go check them out), and appreciating the special place that is Hong Kong.

Wishing you all a lovely Christmas / Hanukkah/ Holiday and count down to a brand new year. Whatever it brings, may we make it a brilliant one. ❤️

Loved my chat with @jenntsang aka THE sponge lady from @sqwishful, up now on gloriousdays.co (link bio). For those who don’t know, Sqwishful makes plastic-free pop-up sponges from wood pulp, which is a rarity in the world of sponges. Really, most sponges could be considered single-use plastic items, especially in the F&B industry as most hospitality industries require sponges to be replaced everyday!

In our chat we talked about her entrepreneurship journey, her one year sabbatical where she did the “eat pray love” thing, sustainability and what success means to her. As you could likely see from our chat, she is a women on a mission committed to her goal, and is simply also a radiant soul through and through. I’m inspired and hope you will be too. ☀️

You can find @sqwishful at @wholefoods in the US or @livezero.hk in HK among other retail outlets!

Ho ho ho I searched high and low and compiled a gift guide of 50 sustainable gift ideas. Love them all so much — all thoughtful things one could use for a long long time. Up on Gloriousdays.co now via link bio! Check it out for some inspiration.

I know the most sustainable thing to do is to not buy anything at all, but we inevitably like to show love through gifts and actions at times. When we do it, I firmly believe we should support artists, creatives and companies who make great products while caring about the welfare of people and planet.

Anyhoo check it out and let me know thoughts xx
