World Book Day ?
.
.
? What do you love about books?
.
.
? As a kid, I was book obsessed. I read more books than I can remember. I entered Readathons. I absolutely adored the escapism a book brought to me, the doorway to another life, another world, another way of being. I wrote as well, short stories, books, you name it. I can't guarantee if anything I ever wrote was any good ? but I loved the fun of it all the same.
.
.
? When I started medicine, if I drew you a graph, you'd see a progressive decline in how many non-academic books I read the longer I trained to be a doctor. I lost the hobby somewhere in between the countless exams and hours spent studying and stressing and exercising to 'manage' stress. I look back on those years now and would love to tell that medical student to go out and simply browse a bookshop for a few hours. To spend a Sunday afternoon curled up with a story. To keep writing, not just study notes, but from her imagination.
.
.
? Fast forward to summer 2018. Becoming by Michelle Obama, Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton and How To Fail by Elizabeth Day - all got me through a tough time. Come January 2019. I set myself a New Year's goal. Reading was back in my life. I would rediscover that love, and continue my blogging writing too. And from there, sharing (just a few ?) book reviews here along the way, books have become again a hobby I can't do without. Especially over the last 12 months.
.
.
? AND I have a Book Club with you guys!
.
.
? So on this day of recognition of the joy of books, I just wanted to share my love of reading, my goal of having my own published book on a shelf someday, and my joy at being able to enjoy and share our favourite books together.
.
.
? If you'd like to join us for book club this month, please do! Details on my page ?
This photo is just a snapshot of some of the books I've read in the last few months, I couldn't fit them all into a photo! And swipe right for my current read ?

BOOK REVIEW ? Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout ?
.
.
? Oh, I just loved this book. It is a really wonderful read, in the most unexpected way.
.
.
? When I started it, I definitely found it took me the first few chapters to get into it, but Olive Kitteridge grows on you for sure. Set is Crosby, a small coastal town in Maine, USA, this book is the story of a fierce, hard-on-the-outside-soft-on-the-inside woman called Olive Kitteridge. A woman who everyone knows and who knows everyone, who can't be missed and doesn't miss a trick. The book takes the perspective of various different residents of Crosby, but all their stories feature Olive in some way and bring her story into theirs. Her husband, her son, their neighbours, friends - all woven into a really beautiful and engaging portrait of small-town America, and the power of family, friendship, love and loyalty.
.
.
? I'll be honest - initially, I didn't know what to make of Olive. Was she mean? Angry all the time? Even likeable? But that's the gem of the book - Olive is simply human. Flawed. Real. Her character comes to the fore with each person's story, and you get to see all of her sides and shades. I think you can't help but like her, probably most because she is exactly who she is - loves, is loved, makes mistakes and finds her way. I've reading the sequel to this book (Olive, Again is the title) and it's like putting on a favourite cosy jumper when I sit down to read it ❤

BOOK REVIEW ? The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley ?
.
.
? So as anyone who joined my book club last month will know, I LOVED The Guest List by Lucy Foley. I went backwards and read The Hunting Party after that, also on Audible - so here's my review, and I know many of you have read this too!
.
.
? The Hunting Party is a 'whodunnit' style novel, set in a remote part of Scotland where a group of long-time friends rent a lodge for New Year's celebrations. 4 couples and 1 single girl Katie - friends since their time together at Oxford and with a shared history peppered with secrets that some know - and some don't.
.
.
? But after New Year's Eve, one of the group is found dead, apparently murdered beyond their lodge. Who is it? Who did it? Why? With a blanket of snow and ice surrounding the area, police can't get in - and no one can get out.
.
.
? So. First off, I didn't love this as I did The Guest List. I was hooked on it, and think the narrators did a brilliant job on Audible for sure, with different people voicing each character. I didn't find the group relatable though - there wasn't a character that I connected with the way I did with Hannah and Olivia in The Guest List. The story was cleverly intricate and detailed though and yet again a twist I didn't see coming at the end which does keep you turning the pages! All in all, a book I'd recommend but would rate The Guest List above it. Foley is a fantastic author and I can't wait to hear what she will be publishing next!

February & fresh starts ❤
.
.
❤ January to me felt like an absolute marathon. And much longer than your typical 26ish miles. I know we're still in 'lockdown' and we have a ways to go yet. But I do feel like we're starting to get to the other side of a dark start to a new year. I hope we are anyway.
.
.
❤ I have had so little time to create any sort of Instagram content these past few weeks. And I've been overly hard on myself about that. If there was ever a time for self-compassion, this is it. Real, off line life comes first.
.
.
❤ So for anyone else who feels like they were a bit blind-sided by January - you're not alone. New month, in a better position than we were 31 days ago, with a further few weeks ahead of us yet - but we will get there.
.
.
❤ I'll probably still be mostly sharing book reviews and the Weekly Balance for now but bear with me gang and hopefully you'll continue to enjoy that non-COVID content too ?

BOOK REVIEW ? Olive, Again by Elizabeth Strout ?
.
.
? I’ve just finished Olive, Again by Elizabeth Strout, and oh did I love it. Many of you will have read my review of Olive Kitteridge a few weeks back, and Olive, Again was the highly anticipated sequel. I’ve listened to a couple of podcast interviews with Elizabeth Strout, and it was so interesting - she talks about how she didn’t actually intend on a sequel at all, until one day the character of Olive Kitteridge appeared in her mind, fully formed as an elderly woman, and so the plan for the sequel was born. I’m so glad she wrote it!
.
.
?Olive, Again is just as good as Olive Kitteridge in my book. It is again set in the small town of Crosby, Maine, and we meet Olive as a now elderly woman, married to her second husband Jack, as she tries to grapple with a progressive loss of independence with age, frailty, and reflections on the ups and downs of her life.
.
.
? There is something both comforting and moving about this book, as there was with Olive Kitteridge. Olive is a headstrong, formidable character – and yet, her heart is in the right place. In essence, she is, like the rest of us, a flawed human being. The sequel follows Olive through the latter decades of her life, with chapters focusing solely on her and chapters on the other characters of Crosby. I savoured every page of this book and really didn’t want it to end. A very special character, and one I won’t forget.
.
.
? Now to find the TV series of the book and watch that!
.
