My parents will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in December. In honor of that they rented a beach house for us all to be together for a few days. I relish my morning routine, so I woke up early to workout, have my coffee, read, and be alone...with an ocean view! After a long walk on the beach, I learned something new. It’s really easy to tell which footprints are mine now - nine toes make for a pretty cute footprint (swipe) ?

I have a friend and family member undergoing treatment for cancer right now. Both are often on my mind.

Lately I’ve been working on clearing out weeds and grass for a flower garden. From above the surface, clover looks delicate and small, but when you see what is below the surface you know it has a root system that allows it weather the harshest of storms. Today it dawned on me these two women, well, they remind me of clover. On the surface both are petite and quiet, but once you really know them - you know there is a whole lot happening below the surface. Both are rooted deeply in their faith in Jesus and tied closely to those who love them. As I watch them weather the storm of cancer, I think about clover…and them…and I’m grateful for the strength that is hidden below the surface.

6 years ago our Crossfit tried a summer camp for kids, which turned into an official 2x a week Crossfit Kids class. Twice a week for six years - my kids have logged A LOT of hours in here and one by one they’ve aged out of the kids class and joined the adults. This girl hasn’t quite reached that point, but she comes with me to adult classes every now and then. I treasure that getting stronger isn’t just something I do or something she does, but it is something we get to do together. I love that one day she will look back at her growing up years and it will include moments like this with her mom (she has the barbell, I’m upside down).

*With good coaching, appropriate weight, and proper technique, strength training can be a valuable and safe part of a fitness plan for younger athletes.

Happy 50th (in Dec.) Mom & Dad!

The grandkids had a sand castle building contest. The boys are still waiting on Nana to declare their fortress the winner. With 4 teams comprised of her grandkids there is no way she’ll declare a victor. ?

17 years ago I was a new mom and would swaddle Corbett and put him snug in a stroller. We’d take a slow walk down an empty Main Street to the library. I’d check out books I never actually got the chance to read and the sounds of being outside would lull Corbett to sleep.

Now I chase my youngest on our bikes down a now bustling Main Street to get to the same library. I check out books I actually read and no one is falling asleep in the middle of the day anymore. I love how familiar places and regular ole’ routines remind me of all the ordinary moments - past and present - that make life sweet.

For years working out away from home was the time each day that I wasn’t needed by others. I could start my day alone (yet with friends), get my endorphins going, and take a deep breath before the demands of littles needing my help for the rest of the day. It was a gift for me and, honestly, for my relationship with my kids.

Then my kids got older. And slowly they started joining me one by one. And it was good.

This morning I worked out with 5 of my favorite teenage guys. What was once a gift to do alone is now a gift to get to do alongside them and their friends.
