An artillery shell prematurely detonated and rained shrapnel down on California Highway Patrol vehicles during a demonstration at Camp Pendleton that was criticized prior to the event by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who closed down a highway because of concerns about shells being fired over a busy thoroughfare. Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth attended the event honoring the 250th anniversary of the Marine Corps. Newsom lashed out at the Trump administration in the run up to the event, saying "firing live rounds over a busy highway isn’t just wrong – it’s dangerous." During the demonstration, "an artillery round failed to clear the roadway and detonated midflight near Interstate 5 southbound," according to a Highway Patrol report. The round was fired at 1:46 p.m. local time from White's Beach, one of roughly 60 the Marines planned to fire, according to the report.

An excerpt from the forthcoming memoir from Virginia Giuffre, one of Jeffrey Epstein’s accusers, was released by CBS News Oct. 19. The released portion of the posthumous memoir details a 2021 trip Giuffre took to the Louvre Museum as she prepared to testify against French modeling agent Jean-Luc Brunel in a Paris court. Just as Ameilia Boodoosingh Gopie started to come into her own as a mom, her world fell apart. At 42, with a 2-year-old daughter to care for, Gopie was diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast cancer rates are rising among young women – including young mothers. Women under 50 are nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed with any cancer compared with young men, according to the American Cancer Society. And mothers tend to put their loved ones' health before their own which can pose a problem for detecting cancer early. "Even though you're busy with life, you need to take a step back and make sure you do your screening" and get your breast exams, said Dr. Stuart Samuels, one of Gopie's doctors and a radiation oncologist with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Patients with mom duties told USA TODAY that juggling caregiver life and treatment after being diagnosed is nearly impossible. Read more at the link in our bio.

Months after leaving immigration detention, Camila Muñoz can still remember the ice-cream scooper used to ladle food onto plastic trays and the "sour feeling" after every meal. Hunger. "You have to eat no matter what, or the night is going to get you," she told USA TODAY. "We were really hungry." In Louisiana – a major hub of the Trump administration's mass deportation effort – detainees and their representatives say people in custody are going hungry on a diet of processed foods that are barely edible, often expired and never filling. A week's menu served at Richwood in August, obtained by USA TODAY, offers a glimpse into the lives of detained immigrant women and how they are fed. Could you survive on this diet? In a major test to the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, Israeli officials said its military carried out strikes in southern Gaza after Hamas militants allegedly fired on Israeli soldiers. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of major "action" against the terrorist group, accusing it of violating the ceasefire agreement that has been in effect for less than two weeks. Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry said Oct. 19 that Israeli attacks had killed at least eight people in the last 24 hours, Reuters reported. Hamas has reiterated its commitment to the ceasefire agreement following the strikes, according to Reuters, and said it was unaware of any incidents or clashes in Rafah. The airstrikes are the first significant escalation in the region since the Oct. 11 ceasefire agreement which led to the freeing of the 20 Israeli hostages still alive after two years of captivity and the more than 1,700 Palestinians detained by Israel since the war began. Another 250 Palestinian prisoners were also released as part of the first phase of the U.S.-brokered peace plan. ????: Reuters

Thieves broke into Paris' Louvre museum through a window on Oct. 19, stealing "priceless" items of jewelry before escaping on motorbikes, the French government said. The thieves struck at about 9.30 a.m. when the museum had already opened its doors to the public, and entered the Galerie d'Apollon building, which is home to the French Crown Jewels, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. It did not say exactly what had been taken. The Louvre, the world's most-visited museum and home to Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, said on X it would remain closed for the day for "exceptional reasons".
