Originally from Vietnam, sisters Chau and Trang, co-owners immigrated to Canada at a young age like myself. They were bullied as English was their second language and have experienced racism at many points throughout their lives. ?

? During the past 12 months, they and their business have been personally attacked receiving comments and messages about how they are “not really Canadian”. Out of fear, the two sisters never wanted to share photos of themselves or share their stories worried that people would not continue to purchase items from them if they knew they were Vietnamese. But now they have realized how important their voices are and who they are not only represent their brands but change happens by sharing their stories. ?

? Celebrate Asian Heritage Month

??? Every year, my elementary school would have an “International Day” where we could dress up in our Countries Traditional Clothes and bring in food from for everyone in our class to try out. So I went home and told my mom about this. She decided to hand sew me a traditional ??Vietnamese “au dai”. This translates to “long dress”, it has long trousers and is a two flap dress.

? That morning my mom woke up at 5am to hand roll over 50 freshly deep fried Vietnamese spring rolls. Because of this we were a bit late to school that morning. When I got there I peeked into my classroom and saw that I was the only one dressed up ? I turned around and told my mom that I wanted to go home and change my clothes. My mom looked at me and said “be proud of where you come from and walk in there and teach your friends about your culture!”

I walked into my class with my mom and everyone screeched in shock! My mom and I passed out the freshly fried Vietnamese spring rolls and to my surprise my class loved my mom’s spring rolls. I knew they were always my favorite but was very unsure how others would perceive it. I spent the rest of the day answering questions about my outfit and telling everyone about my Asian Heritage. ?????

My mom took this picture of me in our apartment that morning! I never truly understood how incredible and proud my mother must have been at that moment. To come to Canada to give her children all the opportunities she never had. But it was always so important for her to keep her cultural traditions alive and teach her children to be proud of where they came from.

This year, I want to raise awareness of all Anti-Asian racism and violence that is happening around the world. Let’s all be a little more patient and understanding of each other’s differences. Let’s help support the Asian community. Try ordering from your local asian restaurant and shop. ?Speak up when you see or hear someone wrong. Check up on your Asian friends to let them know that you stand with them!!!
