1912 Ethiopia Addis Ababa, #Ethiopia Circa. #1912 . A 1912 map showing Ethiopia completely encircled by European colonial powers. . To North (Italy’s Colonia Eritrea), to East (British & Italian Somaliland), to South (British Kenya), to West (British Sudan, aka Anglo-Egyptian Sudan) . Thinking of this time, it’s hard to imagine that the entire continent of Africa (with the exception of Ethiopia) was under colonial slavery. Ethiopia was the one place where Africans roamed free of European domination . This map also dispels two big lies Somalians and some Ethiopians like to spread. The first lie: that Haile Selassie gave away northern Kenya to the British. (Per this map, northern Kenya was already within British Kenya before Haile Selassie became Ras (1916) or before he became negus (1930) . The second lie, spread by Somalians is that in World War Two (1945) the British gave the Ogaden (Haud) to Ethiopia. Ogaden was Ethiopia long before world war 1 or 2. As a matter of fact Ogaden and Somali coast is Ethiopias ancient and lost territories. This was the lies used by Somalia and USA to justify two invasions of Ethiopia (1964, Gen Aman Andom) and (1977), both successfully repulsed. . #vintageethiopia

Jomo For Ethiopia Manchester, #UnitedKingdom Circa. #1945 . Jomo Kenyatta at the Fifth Pan African Congress, held in the city of Manchester in October 1945 . Since 1900, Africans across the globe (black diasporas included) held a series of Congresses to strategize on how to free Africans from Colonialism and oppressions . The 5th Congress is considered to be one of the most significant ones because it was the prelude to the liberation of most of Africa in the 60s . For instance, after this congress, Kenyatta would go on to lead the bloody #MauMau revolt against the British, be jailed after his arrest, and eventually become the first president of independent Kenya . During this 5th congress, only three black nations were free Haiti, Liberia, and Ethiopia. Their flags adorned the entrance to the congress hall. Black representative from across the globe were in attendance (Caribbean, USA, Canada, Europe, Africa) . Manchester was chosen because it was home to radical black activist, considered less prejudiced than other cities, and Manchester workers were considered sympathetic to struggles of the downtrodden etc . 1945 was significant because Hitler had wrecked havoc on all the colonial powers, especially France and Britain, seriously weakening their grip on Africa and Asian colonies . This is why, Malcolm X thanked Hitler. X said, what Hitler did to Europe helped Africans. Hitler destroyed/weakened the enemies of Africans . Swipe to Read the simple resolution passed at the congress (“we are determined to be free …”) . (The slogan behind him says “Ethiopia wants outlet to the sea.” It was adopted by the congress because UK & Italy were conspiring to keep Eritrea. Ethiopias ancient province & her outlet to the sea) . #vintageethiopia

Lenin in Addis Addis Ababa, #Ethiopia Circa. #1991 . Workers remove #VILenin Statue in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia back in 1991. The statutes removal coincides with the fall of the Communist Government of Ethiopia (swipe for more pics) . The Statue was the work of the famous Soviet-Armenian Sculpture R. Kh. Muradyan and the Soviet architect Studenikin, both known for some of the most well known Soviet era statues around the globe. It was a gift to Ethiopia from USSR . It was erected in October 1984 near Abiyot Adebabay (Revolutionary Square), now renamed Mesqel Square. Roughly seven years later, it was removed by new government symbolizing the fall of the Communist Government in Ethiopia . The removal was carefully planned by western press who not only planed the details of its removal, but gave specific instructions on how the crowd should be positioned and react. Crowds were told to Kick it, hit it with a rock, display angry face and clinched fist at it. . Similar reactions were orchestrated all over the world and sent back to the states and other western nations to symbolize the triumph of capitalism and fall of the Soviet Union. The statue of Sadam Husain was similarly removed immediately after US troops entered Baghdad and press took similar footages and photos with similar gestures . It sure was a western triumph, no doubt. What is also true is that communism is an idea that has had one of the greatest impacts in the world. It’s rapidly spread like wildfire for obvious reasons. But more importantly, it was an idea that tried to solve one of the most important human problems, how to better govern a people and distribute resources . Ethiopia has never been immune to the transnational exchange of ideas. Be it Judaism, Christianity, Islam, or any other secular idea, Ethiopia has played a central role. All new ideas that try to solve old human problems, they have made their way to ethiopia because of our peoples cat like curiosity . Ethiopia tried this ideology full heartedly and without reservation. However, it did not address the issue. Thus, for Ethiopia, the quest continues (Ethnic politics does not seem to be the answer) . #vintageethiopia

Mengistu HM Addis Ababa, #Ethiopia Circa. #1978 . Official Portrait of Mengistu Haile-Mariam in 1978. The portrait was taken after he became the head of the DERG (Committee, or Military Junta) that took power following the fall of the Ethiopian monarchy . Prior to him, there were 2 heads of the DERG and state, the first was General Aman Andom, the second was B. General Tafari Benti, and Mengistu was the third. And he managed to hold on to power until 1991 . The Ethiopian Revolution is popularly known as the creeping revolution. It started with protests over simple grievances, and grievance against minor leaders (such as managers of a company, or officers in the army) but gradually made its way to the very top of the Ethiopian leadership until they reached the emperor. Until the very end, they were careful not to say anything bad about the emperor who enjoyed wide support from the population. They said it was people around the emperor and demanded their removal. Once they removed people loyal to the emperor from power, and following months of propaganda, they quietly deposed the emperor . In this regard, the Ethiopian and French Revolution are very similar. In that, the French king was also overthrown by a creeping Revolution which initially praised him and only went after people around the king. By the time they made their way to the king himself, his most loyal supporters were already neutralized and so much propaganda already turned the people against the king. This is despite King Louise’s very progressive policies and radical willingness to bring important changes . Today, our country continues to grapple with the issues faced by so many throughout history. What is the best way to govern, how to best administer a people, how to address grievances and advance a just system . We are behind on Political Science because, while others (west etc) have managed to find the best possible solution to the same challenge, we continue to grapple with it. What’s the solution? Democracy, Republic, Federalism, Confederation, Communism, Monarchy . Different generations of Ethiopians have tried to solve this issue but Challenges continue . #vintagerthiopia

Samora Machel Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Circa. #1976 . (Left) Samora Machel, African freedom fighter and then president, of Mozambique, with Brigadier General Teferi Benti (right) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia back in 1976. General Benti was the chairman of PMAC (Provisional Military Administration of Ethiopia, DERG) after the assassination of General Aman Andom . Samora Machel was attending an emergency meeting of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on Angola . Angola was being devastated by a CIA sponsored civil war. Things got especially worse when White Ruled South Africa invaded Angola to bolster CIA backed rebel group, UNITA. Following this, the OAU called an emergency meeting on Angola . Machel was strong backer of African liberation movements. He was aiding the ANC (South Africa) and MPLA (Angola) and was especially hated by the United States and (white ruled) South African . During this time also, his country Mozambique was being devastated by a civil war (sponsored by CIA and white ruled South Africa) . In 1986, he was murdered by the CIA (and South Africans) when they shot down his plane at night while coming back from a peace conference meant to end the Angolan war . Between 1960-1980 Europeans murdered countless black leaders across the globe. This had the effect of closing down black liberation movement and even reversing the forward March of black people towards freedom. The African masses were left leaderless (genuine leaders) and left with weak and puppet leadership, the masses went back to sleep. By killing our leaders, they put out the fire. We need leaders to awaken our people. (Not woke, woke is something white liberals came up with to win back political power from white conservatives) . #vintageethiopia

Irgun & Lehi Asmara, #Eritrea (BMA) Circa. #1945 . Members of the Jewish militant group “Irgun” & “Lehi” at their detention camp in #Asmara in 1945 . The Israeli flag can be seen in the background (even though Israel does not exist yet, but will be declared in 1948). The banner in the front is Lehi oath saying “if I shall forget you Israel, let my right hand forget it’s skills” from Psalms . The two groups were extremist and violent offshoot of another violent group in British Palestine, the Haganan. The Hanagah carried out self defense and terrorist attacks against Arabs, British, and non-European jews (considered moderates) . The three groups alsmost exclusive consisted of Polish and Russian Jews who recently emigrated to Palestine . Irgun & Lehi members were so violent that they were evicted from the Haagana and the evicted formed their own group called Irgun which carried out assassination and bombing campaigns. The more violent elements were then evicted from Irgun and they formed the Lehi group. They assassinated the British administrator and even UN negotiator . The Lehi were so extreme they were in the process of forming an alliance with the Nazi when their leader was killed . They became too much trouble for the British to in Palestine. So, the Brits exiled them to various places throughout Africa including British Kenya and British Military Administered Eritrea . Some of the members would end up becoming prime ministers of Israel including #MenachemBegin. They were allowed to return to Palestine after Israel was declared state in 1948 . #vintageethiopia

HIM & Queen Elizabeth London, #GreatBritain Circa. #1954 . Photo is of Emperor Haile Selassie I and Queen Elizabeth II during Haile Selassie’s state visit to England in October 1954. . Little over a year prior to this photo, the Eritreans and the British were engaged in a bitter struggle for the future of Eritreans (remain Italian Colony, become British colony, dismemberment of Eritrea, or reunite with Ethiopia). Ethiopia naturally took Eritreans side and from 1941 to 1952, Ethiopians & Eritreans fought hard diplomatic and military (guerrilla war in Eritrea) against Italy and Britain. The UN voted to reunite Eritrea and Ethiopia in 1952 (federal arrangement) . At the same time also, Ethiopia and Britain were on opposite sides in Kenya. Unbeknownst to British authorities, Ethiopia was aiding the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya ???????? (peak in 1954).Providing covert training and haven for those fleeing British authorities. . Similarly, the two were also on opposite sides in South Africa. Where the ANC had began a guerrilla war to oust the minority ( British backed) white government. Less than 6 years after this photo, Mandela (other South Africans) would be covertly flown to Ethiopia for training in guerrilla warfare and sneaked into South Africa to resume their struggle . Ethiopia under the emperor, waged a relentless war against colonialism. Backing every single African nations struggle for independence . Despite the bitter struggles behind the scenes, the emperor was always diplomatic and friendly to all nations, including the British. In 1954, at the height of the MauMau uprising, he travelled to England to meet with the Queen and British gov. officials . In 1965, Queen Elizabeth toured Ethiopia on state visit. HIM gave speech as follows: . “The Ethiopian and British peoples and Governments are old friends. Contacts between us stretch back many years. Our friendship was cemented and rendered indissoluble during the unhappy years in which Ethiopians, abandoned to the aggressor, struggled against overwhelming odds, first, to preserve their nation’s independence, and later, to free it from the despot’s heel.” . Condolences to the British People . #vintageethiopia

Abune Petros Addis Ababa, #Ethiopia Circa. #1936 . A painting depicting the execution of Abune Petros by Italian soldiers in 1936 . Abune Petros was captured and then immediately executed for speaking against Italian atrocities and urging Ethiopians to resist . Was captured in July of 1936 and was given a choice to stop preaching resistance and to make public statement withdrawing support from the resistance fighters (arbegnoch) and discourage the public from supporting them, if he did that, he will be allowed to live, otherwise, he will be executed . He refused saying his conscious would not allow him to do what they ask in face of their attack on innocent Ethiopia . He then told Ethiopians to resist, and that he condemns Ethiopia should she accept to live under tyrannical Italy . His execution led to many more joining the resistance. Until Italy’s defeat in 1941 . He was one of two bishops (Abune) killed by the Italians during their occupation. Another less known Martyr was Abune Mikael who was killed in 1936 along with many resistance fighters in Illubabur . Abune Petros was consecrated as bishop in 1929 in Cairo, Egypt. He was given the name “Petros,” (Peter), prior to that, he was known as “Memhir Hayle Maryam.” . It takes courage to say and do the right things every day. Even in less challenging circumstances, we are afraid to say what is right or even what is truth . Be it stoping bullying, be it correcting your clearly wrong friend, or speaking what you truly feel, or challenging what you feel as wrong in the public . People are scared of being “cancelled” (celebrities), unfollowed -Instagram & Facebook etc, or Unfriended etc, and their lives is not even at stake. Is it becoming hard to find people willing to take a hit for what’s right? . There is an important lesson in Abune Petros action . Happy Sunday . #vintageethiopia
