My son say the darndest things and his outbursts are his very best way of how he can express his emotions in that moment. It is not his intention to hurt me nor is it personal. Which it is hard sometimes for me to recognize in the moment, especially after a long, rough day. And boy, do I try my best to guide and teach my child appropriate behavior through examples and through the limits enforced respectfully and with empathy. As he has equal rights to be respected and heard as well. The last 2 weeks, I’ve been told countless times by C “you’re mean” “don’t like you” “I hate you” “you’re rude” because he wanted me to let him stay longer when I’m picking him up from after-school fun club aka I’m working & can’t pick him up until 5:30ish. Those words I’ll never get use to because it hurts deep to the core regardless knowing he doesn’t mean it. As a parent, my role is to teach, direct, and guide him . When it happened, I got down to his level, looked him in the eyes, told him: “you can be upset/angry/mad at mommy and that’s okay. Those are your feelings and they are safe with me. It’s also okay for you to be upset and be kind at the same time.” He replied: “how can I be upset and kind at the same time!?!” I explained: “exactly how I just explain to you. Tell mommy that you’re upset with me and not say hurtful words which hurt really my feelings.” He seems to understand in the moment until the next time it happens. ???? No matter what happens though, he always wants his mama at the end of the day. It’s true the saying goes “it won’t last forever”. As challenging as the moment is or today is, just remember it will quickly become the past. Tết Trung Thu is very special to me. ???????????? I remembered it vividly as it was a rare occasion celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival with my mom and family back home in Vietnam, having spent most of my childhood growing up in different refugee camps outside of Bangkok, Thailand for 8-9 years with just my mom and I. The Vietnamese version of Mid-Autumn Festival emphasis more towards spending quality and creative time with children. It is a way for parents to make up for lost time with their children after harvest season. This memory of being able to celebrate this festival with my mother who works tirelessly forever imprinted in my heart. It is much more than just eating these ???? (which only made once a year for this special festival) or parading around with a????. It was always something I anxiously waited to spend quality time with my mom and do something special with her, especially under the full moon, which represents fullness and prosperity of life.
