Standout projects making waves around the web

Wishing I was back in Taiwan for Chinese New Year, but grateful I got to at least ring in the Gregorian New Year there last month, when I spent the first two days of January eating Tang Yuan ???? and meeting some capybaras (which my cats are still a little miffed about) ????????????♥️ Here’s hoping the lunar new year brings as joyful and prosperous of a start as the other one did ???????????????? 恭喜發財 ????

We are often told not to meet our heroes, but sometimes they turn out to be everything we hoped they would be and more. It was an absolute delight to meet the brilliant Philip Reeve at the @emirateslitfest 2026, during which we were co-judges of the @mbrspacecentre Short Story Award for New Voices In Sci-Fi, and I moderated an event celebrating 25 years since the first book in his epic Mortal Engines series was published. What a joy it was getting to know this multi-talented author, illustrator, filmmaker, and all-around wonderful human being (and the lovely @jabberworks - the other half of the Reeve & McIntyre storytelling duo behind many fantastic children’s books, including the Adventuremice series) during one of my favourite events of the year ???????? If you’re not yet familiar with his work, there are already at least eight books to read in the Mortal Engines world, plus his Railhead series, his Larklight series, and more. Among the things I learned from Philip, here are two of the key lessons I’ll take to heart: 1) To keep your imagination flowing, don’t forget to foster a sense of play - especially in adult life when things can become rather serious - to bring back some of our childlike sense of wonder. 2) It is hard to write a book, and if you’re trying to do so while working a full-time job - particularly a creative job that can leave that part of you feeling too drained to work on your passion at the end of a long day - be kind to yourself by acknowledging that, but also, don’t give up. Get some momentum going, grab onto it, and just keep riding that wave until it’s done (like trying to hitch a ride on an airship)! If you dream of being a published author someday, just keep reading and writing. All books we love are treasures, but I will forever cherish this early copy of Bridge of Storms (first signed copy in the world ????)???????? The latest book in this unique universe is set around 100 years before the events of Mortal Engines and it comes out next month! ???? Grateful and still smiling ☺️???????? Thank you to all of those who made this possible - @ahlambolooki, @niveaistyping and the @elfdubai team - and of course, @thesolitarybee ????

Incredibly proud and excited to be moderating this very special session at the @emirateslitfest 2026, celebrating more than two decades since the brilliant author Philip Reeve’s award-winning Mortal Engines book was first published, and this beloved series began. Come join us at @intercondfc on Saturday January 24th at 8pm to delve into this utterly unique world and the beloved characters that live in it, and to be inspired by the immense creativity and imagination that dreamed it all up and brought it to life. If you love science fiction, fantasy, adventure, dystopian settings, mind-blowing world-building, and unlikely heroes full of grit and heart, this is one you won’t want to miss! Tickets are available via the LitFest website. I’ll see you there ????

Said goodbye to 2025 with a good soak in Taiwan’s hot springs, to wash away all of the elements that needed to be left behind… while ushering in 2026 the way I intend to go on: with more time spent truly switching off, while I make more room for deeper presence amidst the things, places, and faces that bring me joy, and those that heal and nourish my soul ????????♥️ • • • 1 & 2 - #Beitou #HotSprings 3 & 4 - Local Earth God Temple 5 - Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall 6 - The Dragon Restaurant @sheratongrandtaipei 7 - 可爱的包子 ???? 8 - Eslite R79 @eslite_global 9 - @curista.coffee 10 - Making friends @capybarahousetw #CapybaraCafe 11 - 可爱!!! ???? 12 - Magnolia champaca (my fave flower scent) and orchid temple offerings 13 - Longshan Temple 14 - Jiaobei 15 - Beitou Library 16 - @lessuitestaipei 17 - @grandhoteltaipei 18 - The one and only #KarenTeppanyaki 19 & 20 - Raohe Night Market #TakeMeBackAlready

My stay at @starcroftfarmcabins was one of the highlights of my year so far. ♥️ From the fresh air and beautiful cabins to the blissful quiet (and the velvety night sky that was dark enough to see countless stars) - plus the delicious food from the nearby @greatparkfarm - it was an absolutely dreamy place to get some rest and refill my cup far from the madding crowd, while working on my novel. Already looking forward to my next chance to visit! ???????????? #writingretreat #writersretreat #myhappyplace #blissful #travelgram #takemeback #sussex #eastsussex #catsfield #battle #hastings #AONB #london #england

When you think of the future, do your feelings lean towards hope or despair? Through history, disruptive progress – the kind that leapfrogs us into the future, from the invention of the wheel and the airplane to the creation of the telephone and the world wide web – has taught us that the advancement of technology typically comes hand in hand with the cost of change. Growth is rarely easy. While the pros and cons of AI and other future-forward technologies are still under debate, whether we like it or not, they’re already out there – and for every scary story we read, there are also some inspiring ones. Engineers in Finland have discovered a way to turn sand into a battery. Scientists in Hong Kong are developing an e-skin that may make it possible to give someone a tactile hug via the internet, in real time. Researchers in Japan are working on scanners that can record our dreams. Doctors can use remote robotic operations to perform life-saving “tele-surgery” on patients overseas. The Middle East’s smart cities could institute a renaissance in the way we live. Ideas that once sounded like science fiction are increasingly becoming reality, and like the TV show Black Mirror suggests, it’s not the tech itself that should be cause for alarm, it’s how we choose to use it. If we approach it with ethical and social consequences in mind - for good rather than nefarious purposes - it can lead to beautiful things. It is simply imperative that these innovations are developed and implemented with a sense of responsibility great enough to match their prospective impact. In the latest issue of @businesstravellerme, we explore the potential within the future of the travel, tourism, hospitality, and aviation industries - from robot concierges and supersonic aircraft to next-generation trends, truly innovative dining, and the visionaries driving the destinations of tomorrow.
