Going upside down can be scary initially because we are so used to being in the world and seeing the world from a specific angle, standing where our foundation has been developed. ✨It’s important not to force your asana practice. Allow the posture to come to you when your body is ready. There is also the aspect of safety when it comes to inversions, knowing how to approach the asana to keep your body safe and if falling happens (which most likely it will) to learn to fall in a safe way for the body. ▪️TRY THIS▪️ ▪️Most inversions require some physical strength and balance. Work on developing both of these through your daily asana practice. ▪️When approaching inversions, learn to trust yourself. Even if you fall, you can get back up and try again. Enthusiasm and self-belief are important qualities of a yoga practitioner, on and off the mat. ▪️The use of bandhas can help us to develop steadiness in the posture, so practice mula bandha particularly. ❗️If you pregnant, have any injuries especially of the spine, shoulders and wrists, are in your monthly cycle or feeling fatigued, inversions are not suitable. Key is to isolate each vertebrae on your spine to have the nice wave action (this is one of my favorite ways to lubricate the spine and warm up for my practice!) 1. Warm up spine & shoulders (cat/cow, thread the needle, puppy pose) 2. Isolate each vertebrae starting from the sacrum in table top - arch from the sacrum, round from the sacrum (go slooooooooowly to feel it all) 3. Barrel rolls - side to side, round on the way up, arch on the way down 4. Downdog open shoulder presses to plank - press into your hands and send chest to thighs to open your shoulders in downdog 5. Downdog open shoulder presses round and roll to plank - articulating each vertebrae from the sacrum 6. Once this feels good, bend your knees and arch back to downdog - articulating each vertebrae from the sacrum 7.
