Sappho, the most famous queer woman of antiquity, was a Greek poet from the island of Lesbos. Her lyric poetry, written to be sung accompanied by music explored themes of desire, passion and love – mostly about women, giving us the words ‘lesbian’ and ‘sapphic’ used today. In ancient times, Sappho was widely regarded as one of the greatest lyric poets and was given names such as the “Tenth Muse” and “The Poetess”, but her writings were criticised and ultimately destroyed by the church after the 4th century because of their erotic and lesbian imagery. The Death of Sappho is a famous theme in art which depicts Sappho jumping from a cliff because of her unrequited love for Phaon, a mythical boatman of Mytilene in Lesbos. 1. I shot a series re-imagining the Death of Sappho and drawing inspiration from historic paintings on this theme. 2. Sappho (c. 1893), by Gustave Moreau (1826-1898)

She is depicted standing on a cliff in a white dress, sometimes with a red sash, ready to leap into the ocean at twilight. 2. ????Romeo, Juliet & Rosaline This summer I set about shooting a tragic love trilogy. One story in this trilogy is a modern re-telling of Romeo and Juliet alongside the wonderful @tornandpolished and @virna_gambini who were kind enough to model for me to bring to life the original story of f????ck-around-and-find-out, courtesy of f????ckboy Romeo. Scene 2 - The Balcony ???? “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name, Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I’ll no longer be a Capulet. What’s in a name? That which we call a rose ???? By any other word would smell as sweet. So Romeo would, were he not Romeo called…” Juliet leaning down from the balcony in her nightgown to accept a rose from Romeo. Rosaline, her cousin ????, whom Romeo ghosted at her family’s party to get with Juliet, is lurking in the window watching this in utter disbelief ???? Following early-gothic tradition, Rosaline's presence in sombre colours, lurking in the background is not malicious but a warning to the lovers and the audience which goes unheeded. ------------------------------- I wanted to explore the meaning of forbidden love in today's society, touching on themes of race, sexuality, gender identity and gender roles by using an all all-female cross-culture cast performing the male and female roles. This is also a nod to the fact that women of Shakespeare’s time were actively barred from participating in high society, including in STEM, art, literature and leadership in politics and war. And acting was an exclusively male profession where men and boys played all the characters, both male and female. Putting Rosaline, who has been written out of the story, prominently back into the storytelling highlights Romeo's character flaws and that this isn't a love story for the ages but cautionary tale about a 3 day relationship between a 16 year old f????ckboy with mental health issues and a 13 year old that ends in 6 deaths…as was Shakespeare’s original intent.

Putting Rosaline, who has been written out of the story, prominently back into the storytelling highlights Romeo's character flaws and that this isn't a love story for the ages but cautionary tale about a 3 day relationship between a 16 year old fuckboy with serious mental health issues and a 13 year old that ends in 6 deaths…as was Shakespeare’s original intent. ------------------------------- I wanted to explore the meaning of forbidden love in today's society, touching on themes of race, sexuality, gender identity and gender roles by using an all all-female cross-culture cast performing the male and female roles.
