Ho Ho! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Yes, it’s that time of the year again when the city comes alive with festive lights and Christmas feasts. I am really getting nostalgic about my time in Hong Kong, where all the shopping malls, restaurants, hotels and outdoor spaces bring their ‘A-game’ to showcase their best festive decorations. From gigantic cookie penguins and Disney princesses to whimsical wonderlands, there’s a dizzying array of Christmas displays for you to soak in the festivities this year. Wherever you look, there is an instagrammable spot to shoot. And, my favourite is Santa going around the town and distributing goodies. After all, who wouldn’t want to become a kid after seeing the Santa ????

With spectacular Christmas decor and lighting displays, the whole town is a treat to watch during Winterfest. While every place has its own charm, my favourite places to check out are the Landmark at Central, Pacific Place at Admiralty, Festival Walk at Kowloon Tong, Harbour City and K11 Musea at Tsim Sha Tsui.

Do you know that #Uttarakhand, the Himalayan state of North India is facing a dual crisis – the impact of climate change and distress migration? ⠀
⠀
Due to rising temperatures glaciers are melting, snowlines are moving upwards, and increased risk of floods due to erratic rainfall has become a norm. All these changes have increased water stress, changed the crop cycles, and decreased crop yields. A state where the majority of the population lives in rural areas and 71% depend on rainfed agriculture practised through terrace farming is finding it difficult to stop its population from distress migration. ⠀
⠀
As per India’s last census in 2011 more than 40 lakh – about 40% of the population – have migrated from rural to urban areas. However, the COVID19 pandemic provided a temporary respite from migration by catalysing reverse migration. Unfortunately, most returned to cities when the pandemic situation improved in the absence of employment opportunities. But some iron-willed residents stayed back. One such person is Major Gorki Chandola, who left his comfortable city life to settle down in his ancestorial village - Rawat Gaon in Pauri Garhwal. Pauri is the most educated but also the most abandoned district of Uttarakhand. Would you want to know more about @majorgorki and his ⠀
