Alignment or “posture” is merely important because of the neural pathways within the spinal cord

It’s also important to note that the spinal cord ends approximately at the level of the L1 vertebra — which is the highest bone of the lower back just below the rib cage

Why is this important? — Most of the lumbar spine has no spinal cord. It consists of a large space for the nerve roots, and even serious conditions, such as a large disc herniation, do not typically cause loss of motor functions

Therefore the lumbar spine is less life threatening to the central nervous system than the upper thorax (refer to my CNS highlight) #theory

But that doesn’t mean the lower back was meant to be pushed and pulled. It hosts a plethora of nerves(neurons) in which our brain needs to be able to communicate with

And communication is done by sending chemical and electrical signals. All of which becomes memorable and favorable to the brain depending on what signals are being used often (accessible) or which signals are not being used (inaccessible)

Aligning the ribs and pelvis is restoration of the Lumbar Spine. Something we work for in all positions

Very commonly seen is the lower back extensors becoming tight (over active), resulting in the anterior core becoming flaccid (under active)

Consider the lumbar spine protected by a FRONT muscle system and a BACK muscle system. We want a balanced, synergistic system - one that equally shares load

And since this system is anticipatory and prepares you for movement, timing and activation (recruitment) needs to be trained and rehabbed

There is an essential difference between systematic core training...and simply strengthening the musculature. The brain will fire the big superficial muscles it is used to recruiting...unless it is taught and SHOWN(position) differently

Once the deep core system activates synergistically, focus can shift more from “rehabbing the core” to “strengthening the core”

By adding loads through the trunk, leg or arms you will functionally strengthen an optimal pattern for stabilization...one that gives you stability — creating access to new mobility
