Watercolour skies, sunflowers, the sea. Sequins scattered across the floor; an impromptu dance party, the smallest two laughing. Kirsty in white silk, it feels surreal, I have strayed into dreamland. My face is smiling, my head spins. The air tastes like magic, the roses are perfect, the ribbons that stream from the children’s flowers match their outfits exactly. Nimbostratus’ botanical collar makes me grin from ear to ear. Our celebrant offered to decorate the beach, and our space is delineated with bunting, driftwood, made cosy with a bonfire that makes the children exclaim with delight. A Scouting party, already present and munching sandwiches, greet us with cheers and a round of applause; I wonder how many of these children needed to see that families like mine exist, conclude from their enthusiasm that they are familiar, they approve. It feels special, important. Everything is beautiful. The children sing We Don’t Talk about Bruno as they walk us up an aisle bordered by tealights, vote on the vows, hold our hands as rings are exchanged. They chant: “Smooch, smooch!”. We do. Rainbow doughnuts, joy. We toast marshmallows; the air tastes thick with smoke and sugar. In the distance, the sky is streaked with pink. We shed our shoes, socks, run into water that is so cold it makes us gasp, black with seaweed, white with breaking waves. The float is a pause in which to take it all in, to let reality catch up with magic. It’s a deep breath, the first of the night. And then we are dripping, gasping, warming by the fire, suddenly exhausted and packing away. It feels like waking up, like dawn – but it’s so dark, it’s 10pm, the children are ready for bed and so are we. I love you, I love you, I love you. Kirsty and I were fifteen when we fell in love. I remember the horror - ANOTHER way in which I had failed to conform - and the relief - because she was my best friend, because I loved her and trusted her already. Because she made me feel absolutely giddy with joy every time she sent me a message or we chatted into the night or I woke up from a sleeping over at hers and found her already awake, grinning at me. ❤️ Nonetheless, we both agonised about whether this is really what we wanted: the hard road, the non-conformative road, yet again the road where we couldn’t just be NORMAL. ???? But actually - it hasn’t been so hard at all. Our love, and our family, is mostly full of rainbow joy. ???? This little reel is for the worried teenagers that we were (you can see them cracking up with laughter together on the cover shot) and for anyone else who is hurting about their future, debating whether to choose the easy road or the brave road. Pick the brave one - it’s worth it. ❤️ You deserve joy. P.S. Who remembers when we first became parents? When the second set of twins were born? How long have you been a part of our journey?

AD/PR We were delighted to be invited to watch the opening night of the iconic, fantasmagorical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury last night. Without spoiling any surprises, we LOVED clapping along for the eponymous Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, gasping in astonishment as she unveiled her unique engineering - saving the day, rescuing the children and playing a vital role in completing a family. The songs were brilliant, the energy fantastic and our children were simply awestruck at the talented child actors on stage. It has a 2h 45m run time with a 20 minute interval, which feels about the right length of time to allow this absorbing story to unfold. It’s aimed at children aged 5+, my 6.5 year old needed some tight hugs whilst @charlie_brooks_xx was on stage as the terrifically TERRIFYING childcatcher but all five children (aged 10, 10, 8, 8, 6) were riveted for the duration. Such a fantastic production - definitely not to be missed if you’re local to Canterbury/the Marlowe Theatre, or beyond as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang completes its UK tour! @chittyontour @marlowetheatre #chittyontour

Rock scrambling, wave dodging, hot chocolating and story foraging. ???? Boys were delighted to be allowed to choose from the YA section, although MY GOD, the QUESTIONS I have had to answer… never again! ???????? Vita’s utterly enchanted to learn of @janegoodalluk - her own (stuffed) primate family passed seventy over Christmas and she is very much looking forward to growing up and becoming acquainted with the real ones! Olympia is working her way through everybody’s books (might have to hide the boys’) and Em, my reluctant reader, chose a graphic novel about a girl with roller skates and seems to be enjoying it thus far! How are you navigating this strange stretch between Christmas and the return to school?
