Carved in Stone, 2024. First mural piece???? Grateful @alriwaq for the opportunity. 300+ kgs heavy!!! This mural explores and raises questions about the poetic traditions of موشحات (musical composition telling a sacred story) and the erosion of language in contemporary culture. A central poetic line is engraved into a cement frame (“..is the ocean without boundary or shore..”), inscribed upside down to symbolize the disorientation and loss of cultural narratives, emphasizing the rigor of writing in stone as a metaphor for permanence and fragility. Surrounding the frame are smeared cement textures with engraved mysterious Quranic letters, evoking themes of excavation and recovery. The raw cement and Arabic writing create a visual dialogue between cultural loss and resilience, blending tradition with contemporary.
