Uluru, Australia ???????? "Permits?" - They've almost become a swear-word for eager photographers out there, and I know some who feel that by *not* having one, they've gained a badge of honour. ????‍♂️ Let's not have that become our industry standard for respect, eh? ????‍♂️ Uluru, Australia - a great example of where it's needed, and it works. ✈️ Yes, it’s far away. ???? Yes, it’s full of bugs. ???? Yes, you really do need a permit, ???? Yes, it’s awesome to experience, ???? and yes, it’s most definitely worth it. (Oh, and it happens to make a great photographic subject too...) Read more about my experiences in this incredible place, and how to "do it right" in the blog. #Uluru #VisitAustralia #PhotographyPermit #PhaseOne #MediumFormat

About last night… ???????? ✨ For years, I’ve stood out in blasting arctic winds, ice cold sea spray and horrendous visibility, all to get a shot of Garður’s old lighthouse either at sunset or at night. While I’ve managed thousands of shots of both Aurora and golden skies across the entire island of Iceland during that time - this one’s always got away. Until last night. Turns out, we’ve been doing it wrong all this time. You see, you need to stay in a cr4ppy old (ahem) “hotel” out on the peninsula with sauna walls and horror-movie carpets to “earn” your sky that evening. Step foot outside of the building? Boom. ???????? Sure, there was a bit of cloud, and the new lighthouse’s beam is far from helpful, but we got there in the end. TripAdvisor 4/10 : would not recommend - but the light show was worth it. ???????? #NorthernLights #Aurora #Iceland #Lighthouse

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi. ???????? Shot during our live series with @CaptureOne last week across the UAE, this architectural masterpiece just commands silence from the moment you step up into the theatre of its reflection pool - a “pinch me” moment, as you witness it for the first time with your own eyes. We were lucky this evening - arriving to a slightly hazy warm sky for sunset, we happily thought we’d already had the best of the light. And then this happened - the sky lit up in all directions, with marble reflecting pink and orange light onto every person who was stood there watching. This was a moment when the sky forgot what colour it's supposed to be and just threw everything at us - matched only by the perfectly illuminated mosque just below. We’d been here for nearly 3 hours, watching the sky transform through every photographic phase, but it was worth every second of waiting for this show of light and colour to arrive. #SheikhZayedGrandMosque #AbuDhabi #UAE #TwilightColours #LongExposure #Cityscape #ArchitecturalPhotography #Reflections #TravelPhotography #MiddleEast #OnTheRoad #PaulReiffer #LandscapePhotography #ChasingLight #WorldExplored #CaptureOne

Pride. Mahali Mzuri, Masai Mara, Kenya ???????? Taking the Fujifilm GFX 100 II, GF 250mm + 1.4x Extender out for a spin around Sir Richard Branson’s private safari camp inside the Olare Motorogi Conservancy. And to give it credit - this shot at ISO 2500 did it proud, along with the other thousand I must have taken that week. ???? One of the most rewarding parts of my work is being able to photograph the same locations over several decades; witnessing, capturing and documenting the changes that are happening to our amazing landscapes, all around the world. ???? ???? ????️ So with that in mind - who’s been lucky enough to see the FOG roll in across the floor of Death Valley National Park? (That’s right - the “hottest place on earth” and driest place in North America ???? ????????????) It needs some *very* specific conditions for it to work - but all those crazy storms and frequent flooding seemed to help make it happen. Add to that, the re-establishment of Lake Manly in Badwater Basin, and Death Valley has felt like an entirely new place to go and explore over the past few years. Behind the scenes and even more views of this incredible morning at Zabriskie Point in the blog ???? #DeathValley #DeathValleyNationalPark #PhaseOne #PhaseOnePhoto #NatGeoYourShotOurHOME #LandscapePhotographer #CaptureOne #MomentsThatLastALifetime #deathvalleynps #ZabriskiePoint

Vestrahorn @ Stokksnes, Iceland ???????? There’s really no such thing as “hanging around” or “just waiting for golden hour” at this particular black sand beach. With the full range of weather hitting you in a single afternoon - from sunshine to snow, thick fog to clear skies, wind ripping car doors off their hinges to calm picnic weather (just kidding, it’s never *that* calm…) - an entire year’s worth of seasons can play out each and every day. So when the weather DOES give you a break; when the lagoon IS still enough to mirror; when the clouds above DO start reflecting that warm evening light; there’s no time to waste in capturing that incredible majestic mountain form - Vestrahorn at sunset. #Vestrahorn #Iceland #Stokksnes #MountainSunset #GoldenHour #IcelandTravel #IcelandScape #IcelandExplored #PhaseOne #LongExposure #FrameAveraging #LandscapePhotography #IG_Iceland #Reflections

“Why do you love shooting cities so much?” - It’s a question that often pops up in interviews and discussions I have with different people around the world. And the answer is simple. Because that shot, those circumstances, can only have happened once. Ever. It will never, and can never, be repeated - much like any photography that captures the real world around us, it’s a moment in time that’s so fleeting, even pressing the shutter 1/1000th of a second later would result in a different capture of peoples’ lives. And that’s exactly what a cityscape really shows us. Sure - it’s full of incredible buildings, structures and lights - but it’s mostly a frozen moment of a million peoples’ day. A moment that’s never to be repeated, but now permanently on record. That, right there, is what happened at 18:36:38 on the 5th August this year, just as I clicked the button on a rooftop sunset in Tokyo. #tokyotokyo #tokyotravel #tokyo #cityscape #rooftop #tokyo???? #cityviews #mediumformat #phaseone #sunsetvibes????

Stuck in traffic - Shanghai, China. ???????? The next time you are - look up, high up, all the way to the rooftops - and you might see me capturing that frustration on camera. (Remember to smile!) While buildings and spaces help to define the shape of a city at night, it’s the traffic and trails that bring all that urban energy to life. The lifeblood of a metropolis, that light from these networks of roads deliver a futuristic glow, like arteries, to the towering structures that surround them. And sometimes, just sometimes, you’ll find me appreciating those roads in their own right - just as they are. Context is great, ultra-wide cityscapes (as I have of this interchange) can look awesome, but every now and then it feels like it’s the details that matter. “It’s just a road” - but is it really? ???? Each evening, that road is host to hundreds of thousands of stories, each unique, each special to its teller, and secret from everyone else around. And there’s me, sat on one of my favourite rooftops in Shanghai, just catching the lights that carried those tales. Next time you’re in traffic - remember - your lights might be helping me to capture yours. ????
